Meet the Maker
I live in a rural area with my husband, surrounded by woodland, meadows, and wildlife. I believe that when we are in contact with beautiful things such as the natural world, our thoughts turn to positive and uplifting ideas. I try to put some of the appreciation I feel for the world around me into my cards. Creating them is one of the greatest enjoyments of my life, and I also like to inject a bit of whimsy and fantasy into my work with fairies, trolls, and wizards. I am thankful every day for my husband and son and the world around me.
How it’s Made
It’s hard to say what gives me an idea for a card, sometimes the idea will come out of nowhere, sometimes it will be inspired by a piece of music, or just taking a walk outside in the woods, But, as soon as I do get an idea I can’t get a pencil into my hands fast enough. I usually work out a detailed drawing in pencil first. I’m a perfectionist so I keep working at the drawing until I’m totally satisfied with it; ‘good enough’ is not in my vocabulary, it has to be exactly right. Once I’ve finished the drawing, I transfer it to Bristol board and get out my paints and brushes. I work in acrylic paint and pay attention to every detail. I like to produce paintings that are whimsical, colorful, and show a connection to nature. I usually put a butterfly or moth into each painting. Each painting takes up to 3 weeks to complete. As soon as the painting and its border are done, it’s off to the printer. I used a small, local shop in a town near where I live. They do good work and I like supporting family owned businesses.
