Thomas Critchlow Art Glass
Meet the Maker
Hi, I’m Ailsa, the owner/maker at Thomas Critchlow Art Glass
My love of stained glass started with my grandfather’s stained glass suncatchers. The “Thomas” in TCAG is my grandfather, and he still inspires me. He made suncatchers in his basement workshop and gave them as gifts. Now, I make them in my garage turned studio and share them with you.
With skilled craftsmanship, quality materials, and careful shipping, TCAG makes it easy to find a meaningful gift or something special just for you.
Traditional Craftsmanship
Each piece is made entirely by hand in my central Indiana home-based studio. Each piece reflects craftsmanship and a commitment to excellence. I use traditional stained glass techniques, including both lead came and Tiffany methods, for a timeless, heirloom-quality finish.
Premium Materials
I use hand-poured glass from US manufacturers like Kokomo Opalescent Glass (the nation's oldest art glass manufacturer), Paul Wissmach Glass Co., and Youghiogheny Opalescent Glass Co. Each is known for its rich history and exceptional quality.
I also use glass from Oceanside Glass, a California-owned company recognized for its high-quality, vibrant glass used by artists worldwide.
Whenever possible, I choose American-made materials sourced from small businesses or direct from manufacturers, reducing shipping waste and keeping my studio’s footprint smaller.
Reliable Shipping
Your order arrives ready for gift-giving. Each ornament is wrapped in white, acid-free tissue, cushioned with bubble wrap, and placed inside a sturdy matte black box, where you’ll also find care instructions labeled for easy reference. For extra protection, it’s shipped in a poly mailer. Keep the box, as it's perfect for storing your art when not on display.
Orders are shipped via USPS Monday through Friday. Tracking is provided for every order at no extra cost to you.
I know you'll find pieces that speak to you, whether as gifts for someone special or a new piece to brighten your own home. I’m honored to share my craft with you and can’t wait for you to take home a piece of my work.
Thanks,
Ailsa
How it’s Made
Using a meticulously hand-drawn template, I carefully trace the intricate design onto sheets of glass.
Each piece undergoes precise hand-cutting and meticulous smoothing to eliminate any sharp edges.
Following a visit to the washstand for the removal of oil and debris, the glass is left to dry, preparing it for the next steps.
Copper foil tape is then carefully applied to the edges and burnished for optimal adhesion.
Returning to the workstation, the piece undergoes the intricate processes of soldering and the application of fine details.
After a second visit to the washstand, a rich dark patina is applied if needed, transforming the metals from silver to a luxurious, deep brown.
The piece receives a final wash before being left to dry completely.
Once dry, your artwork is meticulously buffed to a gentle shine before being thoughtfully packed and shipped to you!
