This authentic horseshoe crab shell has been hand-decoupaged with blue hydrangea blossoms, creating a one of a kind coastal art piece. Unlike most decoupaged shells, each hydrangea flower cluster was individually hand cut and applied one at a time to the painted shell. The finished piece is sealed with multiple layers of high-gloss resin, which enhances the rich blue, purple, and pink tones of the blossoms while permanently protecting the artwork.
Dimensions: 13" from prosoma (horseshoe shaped head) to tip of the telson (tail). Prosoma and abdomen (the oval section) is 8" x 6.5" x 2.25".
This piece was inspired by a recent trip to Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where the beaches were scattered with naturally molted horseshoe crab shells and classic seaside cottages were surrounded by lush hydrangea gardens. I was fortunate to bring home three ethically collected shells, and this artwork was created from one of them.

How it’s Made
All of my pieces are one-a-kind, handmade by me. After cleaning the horseshoe crab shell, I sealed it with several coats of resin to give it strength, then I painted it off white, oyster white to be exact. Each hand-cut hydrangea blossom cluster was applied one at a time with modge podge. After drying, I sealed the entire shell with two more coast of resin to protect the decoupage. Notice that the underside of the horseshoe crab shell is still in it's natural, unpainted state. Due to drying and curing times, each decoupage piece takes almost a week to complete.
