Meet the Maker
Hi, my name is Dawn and I LOVE to make beautiful things. My mother was a maker who inspired and encouraged me. She taught me to sew and knit. I enjoyed being able to make clothing that was uniquely my own. I dabbled in crochet, embroidery, basket weaving and more. After 27 years of making custom swimwear; I decided to focus on all the other creative things I love to do. Fabric dying has become a way for me to create unique fabrics that I can turn into beautiful accessories and home goods. Weaving is another way to create one of a kind fabric.
I am excited to share my handmade goods with you. Loving to do custom work; I welcome you to drop me an email with any custom ideas you have. dawnmichelle.handmade@gmail.com
How it’s Made
Ice Dying is quite different than Indigo dying; but just as magical. The ICE part is key to the magic. Fiber reactive dye is activated as the ice melts. and soaks into the prepared fabric. Most dyes are made out of several color components. Just like a paint color you have mixed at the hardware store. But when the dry dye powder contacts the melting ice; the component colors split and drip and blend in beautiful organic patterns. No two ice dyes look exactly the same. It is a magical surprise when the fabric is rinsed and washed the next day.
I like to use environmentally friendly, ethically sourced materials in my hand made goods. And Tencel is a perfect choice for that. It is made from wood fiber (renewable) from the eucalyptus tree. Sourced from a Fair labor mill in India that uses 100% Lenzing Tencel yarn for this fabric. Tencel requires less resources to produce than bamboo. It is a smooth and drapey fabric and less wrinkly than rayon or bamboo. Its durable and dyes beautifully.
