About this Product

This listing is for a download PDF pattern with instructions to knit this hat.

The Welty Chunky Beanie is a handsome, unisex hat that’s quick and easy to make. It’s a super hat for last-minute gifting or movie-night knitting.

Mostly stockinette, it’s a blank canvas and the perfect showcase for a special handspun or hand-dyed chunky-weight yarn.

Welty is worked in the round from the bottom up. A narrow purl welt right above the ribbed brim adds a bit of panache to this minimalist design. The crown is gathered into soft pleats.

Speaking of blank canvas: One of the pattern testers used left-over sock yarn to embellish her Welty with a gorgeous array of embroidered flowers. Her beautiful hat inspired me to adorn one of my sample hats with a duplicate-stitched big flower for a splash of ’70s flair. The pattern includes charts -- in both color and black-and-white -- for my flower and a photo tutorial on how to duplicate stitch.

Meet the Maker

The Chunky Guy Beanie, pictured here, is my best-selling pattern, with hundreds sold to makers from around the world.  The pattern exemplifies what I love most about crochet and knitting: An easy pattern can produce a classic look as well as an enjoyable crafting experience.

Almost all of my patterns use simple, basic stitches.  I occasionally venture into intermediate territory -- but only if the end result is worth the extra effort.

One of my favorite activities is to round up a few balls of yarn and experiment with stitches and shapes and color combinations.  It's an adventure to find out what kind of hat the yarn wants to be.  A sassy, lacy Juliet cap for summer?  A rugged, ribbed topper for frigid days?  A snazzy fedora that evokes vintage glamor?

I really enjoy doing my small part in bringing warmth and beauty into the world, one hat at a time.  My wish is that you enjoy making/wearing/gifting hats from my patterns as much as I enjoyed creating them!

Happy crocheting/knitting!
