About this Product

In Japanese folklore there exists a tree spirit called the Kodama. Not a Yokai, though it has been written about in Yokai texts, the Kodama is considered a spirit. Often they look like trees until they reveal themselves and have been described as an old man or an old woman or a tiny, funny shaped humanoid. They have also been described as a ball of light or even just a sound, known as Yamabiko. Whatever form they take in the story, they are exceedingly rare to see.

Stories tell of them putting curses on people who would try to cut them down or will curse someone who tries to cut down a tree before praying. Other stories tell of how they bless the forests and lands they reside in and often villages (and even in modern day Japan) would tie a sacred rope called a Shimenawa around a tree believed to have a Kodama within it. Today, Kodama have made their way into Japanese pop culture and art through various mediums including manga and anime, most notably in Hayao Miyazaki's "Princess Mononoke" and even more recently in the video game  "Ghostwire:Tokyo". It is clear that, regardless of the intrepretation, that the Kodama are a reminder to take care of our environment. In that spirit, Birchouse Woodcrafts is proud to present our take on the Kodama for you to buy. Made from fallen tree branches, each Kodama is handcarved, and will have a unique shape and personality. Standing approximately 6 inches, these little forest spirits will look great in the home or office, while serving to remind you to not only be good to each other and to yourself, but also, to your planet.

Hand carved "shelf cat" — what a charming design! Mine is in burl and I adore the rustic/modern vibe of this sleek little critter. The cat is about 7" long and will rest upon a bookshelf. Promptly shipped and carefully packed.
