Lacinato Kale:
Our favorite kale! For those who don't fancy the bitter notes of kale, may-haps one should give this a chance. Lacinato kale goes by several names. Most notably dinosaur kale, Italian kale, black kale, and Tuscan kale. Lacinato grows a thick solid stalk and the leaves branch out like a palm tree. The flavor is subtly sweet with a minuscule amount of bitterness. This is a "gateway kale" for those who want to include kale in their diet but aren't fond of most other varieties.
Besides being delicious, this variety has a lot to boast about. This is drought tolerant, heat tolerant, frost tolerant, and heavy producer. All kale varieties will come back next year to produce seeds. You will be able to get to garden seasons out of this kale. Even after our recent heavy frost, we have new leaves emerging. If you are in a cooler zone, you can cover this with a tarp at night and harvest it all year.
These do very well in containers, and even better in raised beds. You simply harvest the leaves from the bottom up so the top can keep producing leaves for you. This is an effortless variety to grow. Even after it's harvested, the leaves stay crisp for a while and they hold up well even after cooking.
These will need full sun to part shade. Maturity days approx 65-80. These can be started indoors to get a head start.
