How it’s Made
Creating a groovy diamondela pattern (a combo of a diamond and mandala) with a pyramid on the back tie-dye shirt is a journey into the world of vibrant designs! First, gather your gear: a white cotton shirt, some colorful fiber reactive dyes, soda ash, rubber bands, squeeze bottles, gloves, and a plastic bin.
Start by soaking your shirt in a soda ash solution for about 15 minutes to help those colors really pop. Wring out the excess solution, then lay your shirt flat. To create that rad diamondela design, fold the shirt in half vertically, then in quarters, and keep folding until you have a narrow triangle. This will be the front of your shirt. For the pyramid on the back, fold the shirt in half lengthwise along the center, then pleat it accordion-style along that fold. Secure your folds with rubber bands to keep it all in place.
Next, get your dyes ready in squeeze bottles. Lay your shirt on a flat surface, and apply the dyes in sections along the folds, letting your creativity flow. The colors will blend and swirl, creating that intricate mandala pattern on the front. For the spine effect on the back, apply the dye along the lengthwise pleats.
Let the dye work its magic for about 24 hours, keeping the shirt wrapped in plastic to retain moisture. After the wait, rinse the shirt in cold water until the water runs clear. Wash it in cold water with a mild detergent, and let it dry.
