About this Product

Looking for an organizing tool that can go from diaper bag, to beach or picnic bag, to market tote and festival bag and then tote your laptop to your favorite coffee shop for homework, your latest project at work or just some me time? Then this is the bag for you - handwoven on my Union rug loom, this sturdy tote bag will hold your essentials with room to spare. Measures approximately 14 inches high, 14 inches wide and 6 inches deep.

After lucking into a mountain of cast-off T-shirts, I decided I wanted to experiment with stripes. So, instead of working on my technique for making clean transitions from one color to the next, I concentrated on the width of the stripes and left the ends to fend for themselves. As this neutral striped cloth began to form on the loom a short uneven fringe began to form also. As you can see, this short fringe needed to be seen, not hidden away on the inside like the regular selvedges of my other bags. The stripes on the outside of this bag are complimented perfectly with the large white polka-dots on the black background of a sheet, found at a thrift store, that was used for the lining. As with my other tote bags this bag is fully lined and sports six interior pockets.

As needed, just toss your tote bag in the washer, reshape and stand upside down to air dry. This sturdy, light weight tote bag will provide years of service. I have been carrying my own tote for over ten years.

Ships within two business days from date of purchase. Purchases made on Saturday or Sunday will ship on Monday or Tuesday. Please check shop announcements for USPS recommended deadlines during holiday periods.

Meet the Maker

Lyon Handwovens is a fusion of my early love of all things textile, a two decade career in environmental consulting, followed by another decade in quality. This fusion has resulted in narrowing my focus in weaving to using sustainable yarns (wool, cotton, silk) up-cycled materials (VHS tape, commercial carpet yarn, plastic shopping bags) and repurposed fabrics (dead stock and remnants from professional decorators, estate sales, thrift shops). Sustainability, like most things is not static and this journey I'm on will require ongoing adjustments, new paths and learning from others. I hope you'll check in periodically to see how my journey is progressing.

How it’s Made

My large tote bags are really 22-inch by 36-inch rag rugs, woven on my grandparents Union rug loom that wanted to take a different path. Part of this need to take a road less traveled is because rag rugs last almost forever and my extended family was and still is well supplied with rugs my grandparents had made throughout the previous two decades. The other reason was getting to and from work without looking like a pack mule. At the time I made my first tote bags (and BTW mine is about ten years old and going strong) I worked at a location where leaving for lunch was impractical, so I needed to have something that everything could be stowed in - purse, ID and lanyard, coffee, lunch, phone(s) and laptop. In order to stow all this in a somewhat organized fashion the lining needed to have pockets, a lot of pockets. Six in fact! These pockets are roomy - the four at the corners of each bag easily fit most thermal coffee cups, an average size water bottle, rolled up magazines or trade journals, umbrellas, etc. The two side pockets can accommodate most wallets, cell phones, sun glasses and small tablets.
