Meet the Maker

How it’s Made

This started out as a passion project, and a vessel for trying new techniques and ideas.

First I took a number of reference photos and created an accurate 3d representation of the Lens.

Then I carefully crafted the piece into an assembly that can be printed, but also easily maintained and customized. If one piece breaks we can replace just that part.

The lens is poured into a homemade two-part silicon mold I made, then covered in a diffraction grating to give the lens a rainbow effect as light shines through. I'd originally wanted to mold in a Fresnel pattern as well so that it would actually magnify things, but the texture didn't fit the aesthetic.

I then hand solder the leds, button and battery together using upcycled ethernet cabling and carefully install it all together. The button is held in with a small plug making it easy to replace or adjust.

The assembly usually involves a fair amount of filing, sanding and polishing to ensure the parts fit well together.

Each Lens takes roughly 5 days to finish (with a couple of those days being print and cure time) and we celebrate each one.
