About this Product
The Louisiana Music Map is a visual tribute to the music and musicians of Louisiana, arguably the most important state in the development of American music. The latest edition of the Louisiana Music Map features more than 50 additional musicians than the previous edition.
The beautifully illustrated print, which was designed to look like a vintage map and measures 24” x 30”, features the birthplaces of more than 1700 native Louisiana musicians who performed in a style of music indigenous to Louisiana, such as jazz, blues, Cajun, Creole, zydeco, swamp pop and gospel. The map also includes more than 50 musicians who made notable contributions to Louisiana music but were born elsewhere, such as Greenwood, Mississippi native Guitar Slim and Houston’s Katie Webster.
The map also features 14 illustrated portraits which each represents a highly influential artist of a specific style of Louisiana music or region, such as D.L. Menard for Cajun music, Louis Armstrong for jazz, Slim Harpo for swamp blues and Clifton Chenier for zydeco.
The map has been meticulously researched using the most recent information to be as accurate as possible, in many cases using newly found census data, historical documents and vital records to clear up previously published inconsistencies. Some lesser-known musicians are also documented for the first time through an extensive research process, often involving interviews with many of the musicians themselves or their surviving family members.
