Meet the Maker

Everything we do starts with the wood. We search out both highly figured and simple, even grained woods. The selections are based on both appearance and functionality.

The turning process starts with an idea of the finished piece and the wood dictates the rest. When we are ready to start, it’s mask on, wood spinning, and we apply tools to the wood. The process results in a compromise between what we want and what the wood will allow. Never fight the wood. All of these pieces are turned on our lathe, in our workshop, by our hands.

With the piece turned and sanded it is time for paint. We take inspiration from nature, cultures, artistic movements, and the shape of the piece and the complexity of the grain. The designs run the gamut from simple to complex and from large to small as the piece suggests. Sometimes the designs take days, returning to the piece multiple times to add touches. We hope these pieces give you years of service and beauty.

How it’s Made

Behind the Bowl

  1. Selecting the Wood: The journey begins with carefully choosing a piece of high-quality mahogany, valued for its rich color, fine grain, and durability. Each piece of wood is inspected to ensure it has the perfect balance of character and strength for turning.

  2. Shaping the Form: The wood blank is mounted onto a lathe, where it is hand-turned by a skilled artisan. Using precision tools, the bowl's shape is meticulously crafted, creating its elegant low profile with smooth, flowing lines. We pay close attention to the wood's natural grain, ensuring the finished piece highlights its beauty.

  3. Sanding and Finishing: Once the shape is complete, the bowl is sanded through a series of increasingly fine grits to achieve a silky-smooth surface. This careful sanding process enhances the wood’s texture and readies it for the next steps.

  4. Painting the Image: The bowl's inner surface becomes a canvas for creativity. Designs are hand-painted, adding a dynamic visual element.

  5. Sealing and Protecting: To preserve the wood and painted design, the bowl is sealed with a protective finish. This not only enhances the mahogany’s natural luster but also ensures the piece is both visually stunning and durable for everyday use or display.

The result is a one-of-a-kind creation that blends traditional woodworking techniques with contemporary artistic expression. Each bowl tells its own story, a testament to the craftsmanship and passion behind its making.
