Meet the Maker
Robb and Kathy Blanchette live in southwest Wisconsin.
Kathy has been crafting most of her adult life. It is not unusual to find her painting something almost any time of the day or night in her she-shed. She does placques, wall hangings, ornaments, etc... Often Kathy goes to her craft room without a definite plan, just inspiration.
Robb is relatively new to woodworking. In 2019 he went to the woodshop at an RV park to make a shelf for their camper. That's all it took. Since then Robb has been honing his woodworking skills, making anything from a porch swing, to jewelry boxes--even Kathy's she-shed.
Robb and Kathy occasionally combine their talents and make things together. When they collaborate, Robb builds and Kathy paints. This summer they will be focusing on bird houses with cute animal features.
How it’s Made
The main ingredient for making a bandsaw box is time.
This box is made from six pieces of mahogany glued together to make a slab about 8"X5"X5"
There are multiple steps of cutting, sanding, and re-attaching. Each step that involves glue adds another day. If any of the steps are done out of sequence, the box could be ruined.
Once the drawers and shell are cut and re-assembled, the finish sanding begins. Much of this needs to be done by hand. I like to get everything as smooth as possible and then spray a light coat of water on to the project. This lifts the grain and requires one last session of sanding, but the result is a smoother finished product.
Five light coats of polyurethane went on to this box. Each coat gets a day to cure.
Lastly, the interior of the shell and the interior of the box were lined with suede. After applying masking tape, a colored glue is painted on the desired surface, followed by blowing a coat of suede dust on to the glue.
