MIDSUMMER - Yellow and Lilac Cocktail Hat
Handmade with care by Jaine

I love this happy color scheme! this hat is made of yellow silk - a pleated base and fabulous buoyant bow. It also features a darling lilac silk camellia flower. Frothy vintage style matching lilac with sassy white dot veiling finishes off the look.
The base of the hat measures approx. 6" across, has silk lining and is held securely on by a comfortable hat elastic and hair comb - really easy to wear:)

Please let me know if you have any questions at all - I am always here to help.

Meet the Maker

Hello my name is Jaine,

My childhood home was a short walk from the Grand National Racecourse in England. I loved to see the ladies dressed to the nines for their exciting day out, and now being able to be part of those traditions is wonderful.

Making homemade doll’s clothes turned into making my own clothes, my wedding dress and my children’s clothes. Since then sewing has been mainly costumes as our family loves costume parties, renaissance fairs and steampunk festivals–anywhere we can be in costume. :)

Initially I thought I would be making fantasy headpieces but this evolved quickly into making special occasion hats. People really liked them and I loved making them! I enrolled at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston for their millinery course and also the foundation class (and lots of other classes!) at Hat Academy. Pandora’s box was opened and I loved every minute of it!

My creative journey from my jewelry business of 10 years, being a prolific oil painter, historical folk painter, home decorator and exploring many, many arts and crafts along the way has come together in millinery. At the moment I am learning stained glass but haven't yet figured out how to add it to hats!

I love style and fashion and can also help you co-ordinate your outfit with the perfect hat. My aim is for you to feel amazing on your special day!

How it’s Made

The first step in making a hat is choosing which wooden block to shape it on - the art of hat making hasn’t changed much for hundreds of years :)

Sometimes I sketch out a design, sometimes I work organically around a gorgeous handmade flower or some beautiful feathers and see how the hat comes together.

All of my fabric hats start with a nice firm base that I steam and stretch over the wooden block, using pins to keep it in place while it dries.  When it's dry I hand sew in wire as another structural element.

Next I line the shape, sculpt and hand sew the beautiful fabric layer and sew in place and make any bows and trims. Next I shape a cotton petersham ribbon for the underside and hand sew that in too.   I hand sew on all of the trims and see if any other details are needed - also hand sewn on of course! - I like to make sure its absolutely perfect.

The finishing touch is a pure silk lining, hand sewn hair comb and comfortable hat elastic or headband.

Last step is to wrap it in tissue paper, pop it in its hat box and send it to you to look fabulous in!

If you would like to make any changes, I'll let you know how long it will take.  If I am making a hat from scratch for you in a different color, timing will depend on if I have the materials in stock or need to order them - I will keep you informed and give you my best estimate.

Exchanges and returns

I am allowing exchanges as a courtesy. I understand that sometimes a color doesn't work with your outfit or you decide to wear something different, its important to me that you are happy with your hat! However, customer is responsible for cost of shipping UNWORN item WITH TAGS back and also the shipping cost of the new exchanged item. The new shipping will be billed at the standard priority mail rate.

Care instructions

Store your millinery away from sunlight in the box it came in or in a sealed box or container with tissue paper for cushioning. Avoid wearing your hat in the rain or getting it wet. Your hat was created by wetting and steaming straw and shaping on a wooden hat block while drying. If your hat gets wet while you are wearing it, it may undo the blocking process and distort the shape. Avoid leaving headwear in hot cars or near high temperatures, delicate materials are used on the headwear and extreme heat may distort or unwrap carefully curled trims.

Sizing details

All of my fascinators and headpieces are 'one size fits all' so no measuring is necessary. They are all on traditional hat elastics or headbands - if you have a preference, I will change it. The hat elastics are the most comfortable if you don't like headbands.

Gift wrapping and packaging

All of my pieces are sent in a carry box or a hat box. Please let me know if this is a gift and I will be happy to enclose a handwritten card on your behalf.

Are they handmade?

Yes, every piece in my shop is meticulously handmade by me using traditional couture techniques.

Help, I need this ASAP!

I get that a lot:) Hats pictured are in stock and ready go and I ship them the same day that you order. Do let me know when you need it for and I will make sure that you have the correct shipping method.  If time is really tight I can ship them to your hotel. If this is a custom or customized order, also let me know when you need it for as these are usually not same day shipping.

Problems

Every millinery item is handmade with love and meticulously inspected upon dispatch. Please let me know if you are not happy so I can solve any issues.

It is really important to me that you are thrilled with your hat and enjoy your shopping experience with Indigo Hats!
