Meet the Maker

Hello and welcome to my shop. I’m glad you stopped by. My name is Dawn and I have been creating in one form or another for more than 40 years.

When I was a young girl, maybe 10 years old, my grandma tried to teach me how to knit and crochet. Let's just say it didn't work out quite the way we would have liked. When I was a bit older and out on my own I decided to try my hand at quilting. It had to be easier, probably because it didn't matter that I was left-handed...unlike knitting and crocheting.

Today I specialize in artisan Christmas ornaments and contemporary, handcrafted art that is inspired by nature. I grew up in the heart of the Adirondacks in New York state, spent a few years in Hawaii, and now live on 14 acres of woods in the middle of nowhere.

How it’s Made

I currently create all my artwork using a 1941 Singer 201-2 Blackside sewing machine that I restored after it spent many years in a storage shed. Unlike the standard Singer sewing machines, many of the normally bright plated parts utilized a chemically blacked finish instead. This is thought to have been in response to shortages of nickel and chromium due to world war II. All it requires is a regular oiling every week or so. The beauty of a machine like this is the ability to handle almost all of the maintenance myself.

I use batiks and hand painted fabric to create my landscape art. I save all the small pieces and use them to create mosaic artwork. This results in very little waste but lots and lots of bags of scraps.
