The Maple Tiger

Meet the Maker

The Maple Tiger was the best way to describe myself and the work I do as a woodworker. I grew up climbing maple trees as a child and as I grew up I learned the maple tree had the most beautiful leaves and shape of all the trees. I came to appreciate the beauty of the tree and the wood it produced.

While still remembering the time’s I enjoyed taking my children and now my grandchildren to the zoo my favorite animal was always the Tiger ,. The tiger was the most mysterious and intriguing of all the animals, so that is how The Maple Tiger was born. I've been working with wood for the better part of 40 years, making family members treasures that would last. I learned early on, if you were going to make something make it the best you can and continuously try to improve. This mentality creeped into my everyday life and I believe that it has made me a better person overall especially in my woodworking and photography. Woodworking has been a hobby of mine that has become a passion and now that I've retired from the industrial class I can concentrate on my woodworking full time.

Maple wood has many subspecies that can be stunning to the eyes, some examples are Tiger Maple, Curly Maple, Ambrosia Maple, Birdseye Maple, Quilted Maple and the list goes on. There is no end on how to finish these maples, so the creativity can keep on expanding. I still make some projects with other woods, it's just maple is my favorite.

How it’s Made

A beautiful Arts and Crafts style Entryway coat rack and shelf. This beauty is made from Curly Maple wood and designed in the arts and crafts style of decor. Built from 4/4 Curly Maple wood I allowed my creativity to design this piece on the fly. It has 2 coats of natural Danish oil hand rubbed for that natural feel. The Danish oil when applied by a hand rubbed application allows the figure in the curly maple to pop. Then applying 4 coats of hand rubbed satin poly gives it a great protection to last a very long time. Every joint is glued and screwed together to give it the strength it needs to last. The keyhole hangers on the back can support up to 35lbs. The hangers are centered on 16" centers to accommodate mounting in the studs for extra reliability.
