About this Product

Gorgeous natural vibrant pink Songea Sapphire(.65ct, VVS, Songea Africa) hand set into 14K Rose Gold vermeil sterling silver setting, on a 14K Rose Gold vermeil chain. Sapphires from the Songea mine have amazing color and vibrancy, unfortunately the mine has been closed for some time now. The popularity of pink sapphire can probably be traced to the fascination with pink diamonds. Pink diamonds are one of the rarest and most expensive of all gemstones, unobtainable for most people except the very wealthy. Pink sapphire is a more affordable alternative, though still rare and hardly inexpensive. Sapphire has become a popular choice for wedding rings since Prince Charles gave Lady Diana Spencer a blue sapphire engagement ring. Sapphire has found favor for both its excellent hardness (9 on the Mohs scale) and interesting choice of colors. Pink sapphire is favored as an engagement ring because sapphire in the lighter colors tends to have more brilliance, luster and fire. Sapphire also has positive associations, such as faithfulness and sincerity. Blue is the classic sapphire color, but good quality pink sapphire is actually rarer. Pink sapphire in large sizes is particularly hard to find. In general, pink sapphire is more valuable than the other colors of fancy sapphire, such as yellow, green and violet. September's birthstone has come a long way since the days when any and every blue stone was called a sapphire. Though its fame is shared with its "Big Three" counterparts ruby and emerald, sapphire has enjoyed a long run as one of the world's most beloved gemstones, earning itself a place of honor in crown jewels, royal accessories, museums, and even in modern royal engagement rings. Lest sapphire get too haughty, it has common uses as well. The rough polishing material on emery boards is made up of lower-quality corundum grains, strengthened with hematite, magnetite, and quartz. The word "sapphire" comes from the Greek word sappheiros or sapphirus, which is derived from the Hebrew sappir. However, according to Pliny's Natural History, while the stone referred to as sapphirus was blue, it was not transparent and, as he noted in more than one instance, was speckled with gold, leading scholars to believe that it was lapis lazuli instead of sapphire. In other ancient texts, the word cyanus appears to refer to the stone we now know as sapphire, from the Greek root word cyan, meaning "blue." This item can be made with other natural gemstones.
