This listing is for one food safe solid oak wood compote, which was handmade by Jeff Bagwell in Auburn, California. It will be shipped with a postcard containing care instructions and an artist statement. This compote is a perfect size for displaying fruit, desserts, and more. It can even serve as a unique catchall for keys and trinkets. It has a nice medium brown color, defined grain pattern, a smooth surface, and a nearly symmetrical shape. A slight indentation has been added to the center to help spherical objects stay in place.

Compote Measurements:

14.5” Diameter x 5.5” High

Compote Weight:

5 pounds, 4 ounces

Materials Used to Create the Compote:

Solid Oak Wood

Food-Safe Waterproof Wood Glue

Pure Food-Grade Tung Oil

Pure Food-Grade D-Limonene

Food Grade Beeswax

Care Instructions:

This item is not microwave or dishwasher safe. The high heat will crack and or warp the natural wood. You may hand wash the item with warm water and dish soap, rinse well, and air dry. To rejuvenate the wood's natural shine after washing and drying, you may recondition the wood with wax. You must use FOOD-GRADE wax if you plan to use this item as kitchenware.

Compote’s Appearance:

We made every effort to provide accurate multi-angle photos of this compote to capture the compote’s natural shape, color variegation, grain patterns, and natural “imperfections.” Yes, it’s true. Some of our pieces have “blemishes” because we often choose pieces of wood with interesting “imperfections," but it’s important to understand that all cracks, knotholes, and inclusions are completely sealed, and the item is safe and strong enough to use as kitchenware. In some cases, for the purpose of artistic design, we intentionally leave void holes completely open but coated with food-safe wood glue, tung oil, and beeswax. Again, we do our best to capture these details in our photos.

Please note that the compote in this listing is close to symmetrical and is one of our cleaner style pieces, with only a few natural "blemishes." It has been dried thoroughly and turned on the lathe twice. It was then sanded smooth and finished with pure food-grade tung oil and beeswax. If you would like additional photos of this item, or if you have specific questions, please feel free to contact us anytime.

Meet the Maker

Lightwell Cottage is a small father-daughter business that offers a variety of handmade gifts. Our home-based business is located in the beautiful Northern California Foothills in Auburn, where we live on a quiet acre with over 100 oak trees and lots of beautiful wildlife. We are both self-taught, and we started this business from a simple love of creativity and a desire to share our gifts with others. In today’s world of impressive AI technology, computerized machinery, and mass production, we hope to inspire others to keep the art of handcrafting alive. Whether you purchase an item from us or simply become inspired to create with your own hands, our main hope is to help spread a deep appreciation for the thoughtful art of handcrafting. Artist Statement by Jeff Bagwell:

I started woodworking as a hobby in 1995. After teaching in the Auburn Union School District for over 20 years, I’m now retired and able to dedicate more time to this favorite craft of mine. Overtime, I learned to challenge myself by moving beyond patterns and creating my own original pieces. I learned that I could use my love of drawing and imagination to work with the natural shape and beauty of raw pieces of wood. The majority of my material comes from trees that have naturally fallen during storms. I’ve been an Auburn, California resident for over forty years now, and I enjoy helping local residents clear fallen trees that I can then use for woodworking. Occasionally, I use pieces of reclaimed wood from other projects or that have been gifted. Because I don’t purchase perfectly milled boards, I’m able to create one of a kind pieces with unique shapes. My favorite form of woodwork is power-carving because it allows me to bring my visions to life. Original wood art is my passion, but I also enjoy making functional pieces for everyday use such as wooden plates and bowls. Each piece highlights what I see in nature, and my hope is to share this beauty through my creations.

Artist Statement by Melissa Lightwell:

I have been drawing and crafting since I was a child and even though I never received a formal art education, I have continuously made efforts to improve my skills independently. Nature has been and always will be my greatest teacher. I was raised in and still reside in Northern California, and I have always drawn inspiration from the natural shapes and colors within my surroundings. My father is also an artist. Watching his own creative process and ability to self-teach is what led me into the exciting world of autodidacts. As a child, I checked out drawing videos and tutorial books from our local library and as an adult, I still challenge myself to learn new techniques through various resources. Independent learning has definitely been a slow and sometimes frustrating process but the results continue to be extremely rewarding. Psychology is also an interest of mine. I have a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and some of my creations are inspired by contemplations on human behavior and cultural influences. I’m also a strong believer in art therapy, for I myself have found creativity to be extremely healing. No matter what I create through drawing, painting, sewing, woodworking, or jewelry making, my intention is to spread uplifting energy and to inspire others to explore their own thoughts, feelings, and creativity.

How it’s Made

To watch a video of my lathe work, visit my about page at: https://www.lightwellcottage.com

I handmade this compote in my personal workshop by turning a large piece of wood on my lathe. The wood itself came from a local oak tree that was naturally knocked down by a strong winter storm. I cleaned up the fallen tree and harvested the wood for my woodworking. When I harvest wood, I become inspired by the natural shapes, color, and grain patterns within the tree. Sometimes, I dry the wood thoroughly and use more precision to get symmetrical shapes, like the compote in this listing, and sometimes I allow the wood to choose its own shape by working with it while it’s still a bit wet. Doing this creates what I like to call “wonky” pieces, where the rim and body shift into slight ovals and sometimes more dramatic curves, which I enjoy working with. I also enjoy working with the “imperfections” that naturally occur in wood such as knotholes, inclusions, shallow tracks, burrow-tunnels, large void holes, and cracks. I rarely look for perfect pieces of wood. I instead look for interesting pieces with beautiful “blemishes” that I can then highlight. It’s part of my artistic style. After thoroughly cleaning out each “imperfection” by hand, I enjoy highlighting them with dark waterproof wood-glue. This also seals the "blemish" and strengthens the piece. - Jeff Bagwell

Detailed Listings:

To decrease the chances of returns and exchanges, we have made every effort to provide detailed listings and clear photographs that show multiple angles of our items. Please take the time to examine the photos closely and read our descriptions fully before making any final decisions. Our items are all handmade and some items are made of organic material, so we ask that you take into consideration the natural "imperfections" and variations that often occur in handcrafted and natural items. It's also important to understand that some of our items are left rustic on purpose. For example, we appreciate natural cracks, knotholes, and inclusions in wood to where we often highlight them rather than hide them. We view natural "imperfections" as part of the unique design, so be sure to examine the listings closely because we do explain these things in detail. We also provide customers with multiple ways to contact us directly, and we welcome any questions about our items.
