Beautifully hand-crafted oyster plate featuring six real oyster shell "wells" set around a scalloped porcelain dinner plate with a pale turquoise rim and gold, pale yellow and pink flower accents. A vintage porcelain nut bowl with a delicate pink flower serves as the "sauce bowl". Clear beach glass fills the plate bottom like melting ice, and a single real 7mm pearl adorns one of the oyster shells wells.
Each hand selected 2 to 2 1/2 inch Pacific oyster shell gets ground down on the back to make it sit properly on the plate, the hinge is then touched up with black and brown paint, and finally the shell is sealed with a high gloss resin to enhance the shell's colorful nacre interior which gives it a fresh-shucked wet look. The sea glass "melting ice" has also been sealed with a high gloss resin. Oyster plate diameter - 10 3/4 inches. Hand-wash only.
The result - an oyster plate so fresh looking you can almost taste the cool salty oysters!

How it’s Made
All of my pieces are one-a-kind, handmade by me. I have a collection of plates and platters from area home decor stores and secondhand shops. The oyster shells come from restaurants in my area, Pacific Grove and Monterey CA, trips to my hometown of New Orleans, LA, and an oyster bar in Denver where I have family. A "smelly" flat rate box of oyster shells is not an uncommon sight on my front porch. After choosing a plate and decorative sauce bowl, I select and clean the oyster shells in a vinegar bath and grind them down on the back to sit properly on the plate. The shell hinge often needs to be touched up with acrylic paint because it gets broken when shucked. Once glued into position, I add the tumbled beach glass "melting ice". And as a final touch, a single real pearl adorns one of the oyster shells. Then I seal the shells and beach glass a high gloss resin sealer. Due to drying and curing times, each oyster plate takes almost a week to make.
