About this Product

Pear shaped Padparadscha Sapphire Pendant with optional Rhodium plated sterling silver chain.  This beautiful pear shaped lab created sapphire is securely held in a completely handmade setting and bail which I made myself.

Padparadscha Sapphire is among the rarest sapphires in the world. The name padparadscha comes from a Sinhalese word for "aquatic lotus blossom." It has a beautiful salmon color. Natural mined Padparadscha Sapphire can cost as much or more than fine blue sapphire and can exceed several thousand dollars per carat. Lab created Padparadscha Sapphires (such as this one) have the same chemical composition and physical properties as their earth mined counterparts at an affordable price. The synthetic Padparadscha Sapphires in Cohee Jewelry are high quality gems having excellent color and cut.

Meet the Maker

I am a retired metrology engineer (metrology is the science of measurement). It's very important to me to stay active doing things that I enjoy.  I love working with metals and beautiful gemstones, so I make jewelry, mostly for women. My motto is: "Make it pretty. Make it special. Make it for her."

I work mostly with sterling silver and gemstones, both cut gems and beads. However, I also work with silver and gold filled metals.  Occasionally, I'll make something using other metals, but it will be clearly stated in the descriptions. Many of my items are hand soldered, including (some) gem settings, hook clasps, extender chains and decorative components and findings. I make my own sawn jump rings down to 1.5 mm inside diameter.

Some days I feel crafty and make dangly earrings, other days I feel like soldering settings for a fine jewelry piece, but I always make each piece with love and consideration for the customer.

Most of my listings are ready to ship but will need a final inspection and cleaning. I also make my own custom gift boxes. Each piece is shipped with the gift box, cleaning instructions, polishing cloth, anti-tarnish bag and tab. Earrings will also include additional silicone back stoppers.

As a final note: I do make most of my French hook ear wires. Yes, I could purchase them wholesale and drop the price a few bucks, but in my opinion, my handmade ear wires are soooo much better and not that much more expensive.

How it’s Made

Setting:

The gemstone is set in a handmade two gallery basket setting made with 18 gauge sterling silver wire. Without going into the step by step detail of making the basket setting, I'll simply say there are 11 soldered joints in the setting alone. The prongs are trimmed, the back is filed flat and a rotary tool is used to remove any scratches or tool marks. The bail is soldered to the setting which is then tumbled and rotary polished to a mirror finish.

Bail:

The bail is made by cutting two pieces of flattened wire to length, filing and shaping and then soldering them together. The silver is hallmarked, branded and bent into the bail shape. The attachment ring is soldered into place. The bail is then soldered to the pendant.

Stone Setting:

The stone is mounted to the setting using standard stone setting techniques.
