About this Product

This bag is sure to turn heads at your next pet store run or reptile expo! We dye cotton tote bags and stamp them with hand carved stamps, a process known as block printing. Due to the beautiful variation in every press of the stamp, each bag is wildly one-of-a-kind. Some bags may even have a faded or vintage look.

These roomy totes will easily fit two jumbo rolls of paper towels OR a sweatshirt, water bottle, and pair of shoes OR a 15" laptop. They are perfect for small trips to the store or carrying your daily necessities.

Note to buyer - We try our best to iron the bags before shipping, but "scrunch dying" can generate some gnarly wrinkles!

The Serpentry

Meet the Maker

Hey there, you bizarre animals!

I'm Kate, the fearless head snake wrangler and creative genius behind The Serpentry. So, what exactly is a "serpentry," you ask? Well, it's not just a word we made up – it's our unique snake-infused world!

We embarked on this wild adventure back in 2015, when The Serpentry was just a humble hobby breeder of snakes. Fast forward to 2021, and we've officially blossomed into a quirky small business. The Serpentry was conceived out of a rather peculiar realization: why is it so darn challenging to find high-quality, handcrafted goodies featuring our beloved slithering buddies?

I mean, don't get us wrong – farm animals, dogs, cats, and birds are everywhere in the world of handmade products, and people LOVE them. But where are all the snake-themed treasures, tarantula trinkets, salamander swag, lizard loot, and crocodile keepsakes? It's like they were playing hide-and-seek!

Our mission is to remedy this reptile-centric injustice. We're on a quest to bring you a colorful array of gifts and goodies that pay homage to exotic animals and the wonderful folks who adore them.

Join us on this fantastic journey at The Serpentry, and let's celebrate the unique beauty of Mother Nature's most unusual critters together!

Stay Wild,

Kate and the Snakes

How it’s Made

Making one of our cotton tote bag involves a few steps:

  1. Washing: First, the cotton bags are cleaned to remove any starch, dirt, or oil that may prevent dye and ink from adhering to the bags.
  2. Dyeing: To add color and design, the bag is soaked in dye using a method called "scrunch dyeing." This involves scrunching or bunching up the fabric to create a unique and irregular pattern when dye is applied.
  3. Fixing the Dye: A chemical treatment and heat are applied to fix the dye to the fabric, reducing color bleeding and fading.
  4. Washing: All the bags are rinsed in cool water, washed with detergent to remove excess dye, dried, and ironed prior to printing.
  5. Printing: After the bag is ironed, hand-carved stamps (by The Serpentry or other artists) are used to create a design on the bag. The ink must be applied to the stamp in an even layer and forcefully pressed into the fabric to create a crisp print. No press of the stamp is the same and this creates a lot of beautiful variation.
  6. Curing: Once the ink is applied, the bag is left to dry for at least a week prior to sale. This ensures the ink sets and the bag is washable.

And voilà! You have a beautiful, hand-dyed and hand-printed cotton tote bag ready to carry your stuff in style.
