Meet the Maker

Creating from a place of deep connection and reverence for the natural world, our plant allies, and our beloved Planet Earth, I have integrated my many years of wandering the wildlands as a wilderness guide and National Park Ranger with my dedication to cultivation of permaculture-minded urban gardens into my collection of botanical apothecary products and Earth-friendly functional art handcrafts.  Living in the remote environment of the temperate rainforest on Washington State's Hood Canal - which is actually the only true fjord in the 'lower' or contiguous 48 US States - I am surrounded by misty mountains, rolling rivers and creeks, and lush forests of towering trees, dangling ferns and mushroom surprises -- where the medicinal and culinary herbs which myself and other local growers cultivate and wildcraft, thrive.  The surrounding forests and tidelands offer many natural object treasures, which I work to incorporate into my work, along with various vintage and/or repurposed materials that are finding new life and purpose as meaningful art that has Earth-friendly function and a hip, botanical vibe.  Many cultures worldwide have acknowledged that our Earth is like a wise grandmother, a clever turtle who carries all that she (and we, her human traveling companions) need on her shell.  Welcome to my shop Grandmother Turtle Designs -  where I work to share my designs and creations to help forge anew that connection to Earth and all the abundant and fragile treasures she has to share with us.

Shop Policies

Orders are shipped Monday through Saturday and are processed within 36 hours of order placement.  Hood Canal Local Delivery option is available to locals and visitors wanting meetup/pickup options in the following towns: Belfair, Union, Allyn and Hoodsport.  These are the only areas in which a local delivery option ($2 flat rate fee) is available, but USPS Ground Advantage is a great option for outlying and out of state areas and is quite reasonably priced and generally arrives within one week of purchase, often sooner.

All of our apothecary products are mindfully created from my own recipes and blends  (never tested on animals, but only human-tested on my kind and willing friends and colleagues who have helped me forge and perfect these creations from start-to-finish over the years!) with the highest quality ingredients, organic and fair-trade sourced, whenever possible.  Whole herb and botanical plant inclusions are either homegrown by myself, locally grown by reputable and often organic/permaculture growers, or are mindfully wildcrafted, sourced from local purveyors with proven sustainability ethics, in order to encourage and support our small, remote community economy and protect our incredible biodiverse natural ecosystem.

Please note some of the fabrics I use to create my handcrafted textile goods are vintage and/or are repurposed, salvaged or castaway/found treasures that are being recreated into functional art once more.  Every effort is made to ensure the quality of the exact cuts used on your creation, however due to the nature of these Earth-friendly sourcing efforts, occasionally small blemishes may be visible.

If you are unhappy with your product, or would like to request an exchange or refund, please feel free to contact the shop with your request and every effort will be made to address that need in a timely and equitable manner.  I want you to be happy with your purchase and treasure it as a resource you will love and use for a long time, and I hope you'll understand that creating art with a repurposing ethic occasionally has a few unexpected results.

When appropriate, specific care and use instructions are provided with our products.
