How it’s Made
How I Make My Hand Spun Yarn in a Purple to Blue Gradient
Crafting unique, hand-dyed yarn is my blend of artistry and science. Here's a glimpse into my process for creating these one-of-a-kind skeins:
- Preparation: First, I take the hand spun yarn, which is about 133 yards, and wind it meticulously into a cake. This specific shape is the key to getting that beautiful gradient effect.
- The Dyeing Process: Once wound, I gently immerse the yarn cake into my purple dye bath. This is where the magic unfolds. Due to the cake's design, the dye saturates the outer layers first. As moments pass, it begins its journey inwards.
- Creating the Gradient: As the dye moves towards the center, its intensity naturally diminishes and the purple fades to blue. This results in a yarn that starts with a rich purple on the outside and gracefully fades to a more delicate blue in the middle. This means each skein I dye has its own unique gradient.
- The Beautiful Outcome: For those who start their knitting or crocheting from the darkest end, you'll witness an enchanting transition in your creation. The piece will begin with a deep purple shade and slowly transition to a gentler, lighter hue, showcasing the unique gradient effect.
