Meet the Maker
Everything we do starts with the wood. We search out both highly figured and simple, even grained woods. The selections are based on both appearance and functionality.
The turning process starts with an idea of the finished piece and the wood dictates the rest. When we are ready to start, it’s mask on, wood spinning, and we apply tools to the wood. The process results in a compromise between what we want and what the wood will allow. Never fight the wood. All of these pieces are turned on our lathe, in our workshop, by our hands.
With the piece turned and sanded it is time for paint. We take inspiration from nature, cultures, artistic movements, and the shape of the piece and the complexity of the grain. The designs run the gamut from simple to complex and from large to small as the piece suggests. Sometimes the designs take days, returning to the piece multiple times to add touches. We hope these pieces give you years of service and beauty.

How it’s Made
Creating a hand-turned bottle opener is a meticulous and artistic process that blends woodworking and metalworking to produce a functional and visually appealing tool. Here’s an overview of how these unique bottle openers are crafted:
1. Selecting the Wood
The process begins with choosing a high-quality wood, such as walnut, white oak, or maple. The selected wood is prized for its strength, beauty, and ability to hold intricate details. Each wood blank is inspected for grain, texture, and color to ensure a visually appealing final product.
2. Preparing the Blank
The wood blank is cut to size, slightly larger than the desired dimensions of the finished handle. This allows room for shaping and refining the design during turning.
3. Mounting on the Lathe
The prepared blank is mounted onto a lathe, a machine that spins the wood at high speed. This rotation allows the artisan to shape the wood symmetrically using specialized hand tools like gouges and chisels.
4. Shaping the Handle
As the lathe spins, the artisan carefully carves the blank into the desired shape for the bottle opener’s handle. This is where creativity shines—designs can range from sleek and modern to ornate and traditional. The handle is contoured to ensure a comfortable grip and an aesthetically pleasing appearance.
5. Sanding and Finishing
Once the handle is shaped, it is sanded with progressively finer grits of sandpaper to achieve a smooth surface. A finish, such as oil, wax, or lacquer, is applied to enhance the wood’s natural beauty and protect it from wear. This step brings out the grain and ensures the handle is durable and resistant to moisture.
6. Engraving (Optional)
If the handle includes a custom engraving or text, such as a humorous phrase or personalized message, it is added at this stage. Laser engraving or hand tools are used to create precise and lasting designs.
7. Attaching the Opener
A stainless steel bottle opener mechanism is attached to the wooden handle. This involves securely fitting the metal components into the handle, often with screws or strong adhesives. The connection is tested to ensure durability and functionality.
8. Quality Inspection
The completed bottle opener is inspected for both aesthetic appeal and functionality. The handle’s finish, shape, and engraving are checked, and the opener is tested to ensure smooth and reliable performance.
9. Polishing and Packaging
The bottle opener receives a final polish to bring out its shine and luster. It is then packaged, ready to be enjoyed as a unique tool or given as a thoughtful gift.
Each hand-turned bottle opener is a testament to the artisan’s skill and the beauty of natural materials, resulting in a functional piece of art that enhances any bar or kitchen.
