About this Product

This is a hand made quarter sawn white oak wooden bowl hand turned on a wood lathe. The bowl diameter is 6 3/4 inches by 3 1/16 inches tall. The wood for this bowl was quarter sawn from a white oak log. Quarter sawing reveals the medullary rays that show up on this bowl as light colored streaks. These medullary rays center nicely in the bottom of this bowl. The figure, grain pattern and coloration of each piece of solid wood is unique and one of a kind. My goal is to create a functional or decorative bowl that takes advantage of this and adds beauty to its setting and provides joy to the observer. When I am turning the bowl I spend a lot of time and pay attention to the profile and proportion, looking for a graceful curve and pleasing shape. The finish is food safe linseed oil and bees wax.

Meet the Maker

I enjoy working with wood. Twenty years ago I began making furniture including tables, chairs, jewelry boxes, and cutting boards. I teach woodworking classes in the Milwaukee area and have presented on various woodworking topics to Wisconsin woodworking clubs and groups. Now most of my woodworking time is spent turning wood into bowls and other decorative and utilitarian items.

Wood is such a warm, inviting and infinitely interesting medium to work with. No two pieces of wood are the same. When turning a bowl, I look to maximize the beauty of that piece of wood and what it can become. Attention is paid to the grain and characteristics of the wood. A pleasing shape and form is a priority with much attention paid to proportion and lines.

How it’s Made

All bowls offered here are hand made and hand turned on a wood lathe by me. I rough turn most of my bowls from log sections of downed trees then slowly let the wood dry over several months in a controlled environment. When dry, the bowl is mounted on my lathe and turned a second time to its final form. This is done so the wood does not crack while drying and the final form is round with an even rim. A bowl intended for use with food is finished with walnut or linseed oil and beeswax so it is food safe and can be easily rejuvenated by the owner with readily available mineral oil. A decorative bowl is first sealed with shellac, then several coats of Danish Oil are applied for both protection of the wood and to enhance the beauty in the wood. Finally, the finish is buffed and waxed to bring it to a pleasing sheen with a smooth feel that invites the touch. Decorative bowls are best dusted with a clean, slightly damp cotton cloth.
