About this Product

Jump rope made from plastic shopping bags. Great for both kids and adults, play or exercise!

7-8 plastic shopping bags (2.25 mils thickness) are woven together for each rope. Handles are made from spent thread cones.

Length: 6-7 feet long. Length can be shortened by tying a knot at the desired length.

Rope colors are primarily shades of grey and brown; handles are primarily grey or white. The weave pattern, color proportions, and handle color of the jump rope you receive may vary, as each item is unique and depends on the materials I have available when weaving a new rope.

-----

Plastic shopping bags are estimated to be used for an average of 10-20 minutes before being discarded. These bags are intended to be reused up to 125 times, but shoppers rarely bring them back to the store for reuse. And although certain retailers have bins for collecting plastic film for recycling, Waste Management estimates that only 1% of the 14 billion plastic shopping bags used in the U.S. are returned to these bins for recycling.

Reducing plastic consumption is the most important action to take compared to reusing and recycling. However, there is plenty of plastic material already in circulation that can be made into useful, durable items - such as jump ropes! My hope is that you will enjoy your jump rope for years to come, and that you will take action to reduce your plastic consumption along the way.

Meet the Maker

My name is Laura and I live in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I use predominantly secondhand materials in all my makes, sourced from thrift stores, de-stashes, worn out clothing/linens, and even plastic film such as poly mailers, grocery bags, and miscellaneous plastic packaging. I have found that there are more than enough quality materials already in existence, that participating in the demand for the production of new materials is unnecessary. I hope you find something that you love and are inspired to see the materials all around you in a new light!

How it’s Made

These jump ropes were made using a custom-made, oversized kumihimo disk with long strips of plastic bags. Each jump rope diverts 7-8 thick plastic bags from the landfill.
