Who were the Shakers?
The Shakers who began their history in Manchester, England in the mid-18th century, practiced their beliefs in communities where members devoted themselves to work and worship. Shaker craftsmen and craftswomen incorporated their principles into their work: durability, simplicity, utility, perfection, grace. Their communal lifestyle freed them from the economic pressures of life experienced by craftsmen in the world; therefore, in such an atmosphere the finest work was expected and accomplished.

Handmade Shaker box and other Shaker Designs. I was inspired by the diligent hands of Shaker craftsmen years ago. I create the same traditional boxes, cupboards, trays, clocks, tables and more. I have mastered the same techniques used by these hardworking people to create timeless, serviceable wooden goods.
How it’s Made
Each Shaker Wood Basket is handcrafted using traditional methods that honor the original Shaker approach to fine woodworking. The process begins with carefully selected maple wood, prized for its light color, strength, and smooth grain. Each piece of wood is cut, shaped, and steam-bent by hand to achieve the clean lines and graceful curves characteristic of true Shaker design.
The basket is assembled using copper tacks, a hallmark of Shaker craftsmanship known for both beauty and durability. The swing handle is carefully fitted to move smoothly and securely, while the removable lid is made to rest neatly on top, offering both function and refined simplicity.
Once construction is complete, the entire piece is hand-finished with a hand-rubbed oil varnish that protects the wood while accentuating its natural grain and warmth. This clear finish reflects the Shaker appreciation for honest materials and the timeless beauty of natural wood.
