Handmade Shaker box and other Shaker Designs. I was inspired by the diligent hands of Shaker craftsmen years ago. I create the same traditional boxes, cupboards, trays, clocks, tables and more. I have mastered the same techniques used by these hardworking people to create timeless, serviceable wooden goods.
How it’s Made
Each Handmade Shaker Cherry Wood Nesting Box (Size 4) begins as a carefully selected piece of solid cherry wood, prized for its rich tone, durability, and smooth grain. Following time-honored Shaker techniques, the wood is hand-cut and planed to precise thinness before being gently steamed to achieve flexibility.
Once pliable, the wood is carefully bent around a form to create the graceful oval shape that defines Shaker craftsmanship. The distinctive “fingers” on the band are overlapped and hand-fastened with authentic copper tacks, just as the Shakers did over two centuries ago. Each joint and edge is shaped and sanded until perfectly smooth, ensuring that the box is as functional as it is beautiful.
After assembly, the box receives a hand-rubbed oil varnish finish, which enhances the natural beauty of the cherry wood while providing lasting protection. This labor-intensive process brings out a warm, satin sheen that will deepen in character with age.
