Who were the Shakers?
The Shakers who began their history in Manchester, England in the mid-18th century, practiced their beliefs in communities where members devoted themselves to work and worship. Shaker craftsmen and craftswomen incorporated their principles into their work: durability, simplicity, utility, perfection, grace. Their communal lifestyle freed them from the economic pressures of life experienced by craftsmen in the world; therefore, in such an atmosphere the finest work was expected and accomplished.

Shaker Designs by R V Simo
Handmade Shaker box and other Shaker Designs. I was inspired by the diligent hands of Shaker craftsmen years ago. I create the same traditional boxes, cupboards, trays, clocks, tables and more. I have mastered the same techniques used by these hardworking people to create timeless, serviceable wooden goods.
How it’s Made
Each Shaker Oak Carrier is individually handcrafted in the traditional Shaker style. The body and handle are made from solid oak, carefully cut and shaped to highlight the wood’s natural strength and grain. The pieces are joined and secured using copper tacks, just as the Shakers did, creating a durable and beautiful construction that will last for generations.
After assembly, the carrier is finished with a clear, colorless varnish that enhances the natural warmth and texture of the oak without altering its tone. This finish reflects the Shakers’ appreciation for simple, honest materials and the broader American tradition of showcasing natural wood in handcrafted furniture and household items.
Each piece is made by hand, resulting in subtle variations in grain and tone that make every carrier unique and true to the spirit of Shaker craftsmanship.
