Who were the Shakers?
The Shakers, who began their history in Manchester, England, in the mid-18th century, practiced their beliefs in communities where members devoted themselves to work and worship. Shaker craftsmen and craftswomen incorporated their principles into their work: durability, simplicity, utility, perfection, and grace. Their communal lifestyle freed them from the economic pressures of life experienced by craftsmen in the world; therefore, in such an atmosphere the finest work was expected and accomplished.

Shaker Designs by R V Simo
Handmade Shaker box and other Shaker Designs. I was inspired by the diligent hands of Shaker craftsmen years ago. I create the same traditional boxes, cupboards, trays, clocks, tables and more. I have mastered the same techniques used by these hardworking people to create timeless, serviceable wooden goods.
How it’s Made
Each Authentic Handmade Shaker Wooden Nesting Box (Size 1) begins as a carefully selected piece of cherry wood, chosen for its fine grain, strength, and warm color. Following traditional Shaker methods, the thin wood band is hand-cut, precisely shaped, and steamed until pliable. While still warm, it’s gently bent around a custom mold to form the classic oval shape that has defined Shaker craftsmanship for centuries.
Once shaped, the overlapping “fingers” are secured by hand using authentic copper tacks, a hallmark of original Shaker joinery. The bottom and lid are then fitted and sanded smooth to create a perfect, seamless fit. No shortcuts—only patient craftsmanship and respect for the wood.
After assembly, each box is finished with a hand-rubbed oil varnish, bringing out the natural luster of the cherry wood and ensuring long-lasting protection. This careful finishing process enhances the box’s smooth touch and gives it the timeless glow that deepens with age.
