The Shakers, who began their history in Manchester, England, in the mid-18th century, practiced their beliefs in communities where members devoted themselves to work and worship. Their communal lifestyle freed them from the economic pressures of life experienced by craftsmen in the world; therefore, in such an atmosphere the finest work was expected and accomplished.

Shaker Designs by R V Simo
Handmade Shaker box and other Shaker Designs. I was inspired by the diligent hands of Shaker craftsmen years ago. I create the same traditional boxes, cupboards, trays, clocks, tables and more. I have mastered the same techniques used by these hardworking people to create timeless, serviceable wooden goods.
How it’s Made
Each Traditional Shaker Cherry Wood Nesting Box Set is handcrafted using time-honored methods that celebrate Shaker simplicity and precision. The process begins with selecting fine-grained cherry wood, chosen for its rich color and natural strength. Each board is hand-cut and planed to an exact thickness before being carefully steamed to achieve flexibility—an essential step that allows the wood to be bent into the graceful oval shape characteristic of true Shaker design.
While still warm and pliable, each band is shaped around a form and secured with traditional overlapping “fingers,” then fastened by hand with authentic copper tacks. This traditional joinery method not only ensures durability but also preserves the distinctive look of historic Shaker craftsmanship. Once shaped, the bottoms and lids are fitted and finely sanded to ensure a seamless, nestable fit across all four box sizes.
To complete the process, each box is finished with a hand-rubbed oil varnish, enhancing the natural beauty of the cherry wood and creating a warm, satin luster that deepens over time. This meticulous finish not only protects the wood but also brings out its inherent elegance and smooth texture.
The result is a harmonious set of four nesting boxes that embody the Shaker devotion to simplicity, utility, and grace.
