About this Product

This incredibly soft drapey shawl was woven on my larger rigid heddle loom in five shades of 100% cotton yarn. This shawl is just the accessory your LBD needs for an outdoor or indoor event where the night air or AC is on the chilly side. In addition to the gradient changes drawing the eye in, the 6 inches of twisted fringe provides movement that also demands attention.

The finished shawl is 20 inches wide and 68 inches in length. As detailed in the How It’s Made section there is one repeat of the design in the width and two repeats of the color progression in the length.

My woven products are laundered prior to being offered for sale. In addition to ensuring you receive a clean product that is ready to wear, “wet finishing” is an important step for any woven product. Wet finishing allows the yarns that have been under tension while on the loom to relax and for cotton or wool yarns it allows some shrinkage to occur that closes those open spaces you can see on the loom. The important thing to remember here is that while wet finishing often requires very warm to hot water, this is for the initial wash only. Continued exposure to warm or hot water may cause further shrinkage similar to accidentally shrinking a wool sweater.

Meet the Maker

Lyon Handwovens is a fusion of my early love of all things textile, a two decade career in environmental consulting, followed by another decade in quality. This fusion has resulted in narrowing my focus in weaving to using sustainable yarns (wool, cotton, silk) up-cycled materials (VHS tape, commercial carpet yarn, plastic shopping bags) and repurposed fabrics (dead stock and remnants from professional decorators, estate sales, thrift shops). Sustainability, like most things is not static and this journey I'm on will require ongoing adjustments, new paths and learning from others. I hope you'll check in periodically to see how my journey is progressing.

How it’s Made

I have been imagining this shawl in my head since last fall when I saw a fellow weavers use of narrow stripes bracketing wide stripes while moving in an ordered progression. While her piece used several different colors I wanted to see how a monochromatic palette would work.

With five gradient shades of cotton yarn and a specific design in my head the hardest part was making the math (or the limits of the loom) fit the design. After several sketches I settled on a 4-4-16-4-4 pattern for the warp and a 4.5 inch wide series of weft blocks. Both the warp and weft follow a pattern of dark to light to dark. The warp has only one repeat while the weft repeats twice.
