How it’s Made

Making a rope bowl is a fun project that involves stitching rope together to create a bowl shape. The process is similar to pottery, and the curvature of the sides depends on how you shape it. Here are some tips for making a rope bowl:

  • Supplies

You'll need rope, a sewing machine, and thread. You can also use fabric to wrap around the rope.

  • Stitching

Use a zigzag stitch. You can adjust the stitch width and length settings on your machine. A shorter, tighter zigzag stitch will sink into the fabric instead of sitting on top.

  • Shaping

As you stitch, strategically shift the rope to create the bowl shape. You can hold the base at a 45 degree angle to the machine to create a bowl shape instead of a round platter.

  • Adding fabric

You can wrap fabric around the rope before stitching. To do this, you can:

    • Glue a generous amount of glue to the last 2-3” of a fabric strip

    • Lay the end of the rope on top

    • Wrap the fabric around the rope, keeping it smooth and a little tight

    • Secure the fabric strip to the rope with glue

    • Repeat with the next strip, overlapping the first
