Meet the Maker

Hello, my name is Lisa. I reside on the prairies of southwest Minnesota and am the designer/creator for Prairie Looms. I am married with 5 fabulous children and 1 beautiful granddaughter.

I began weaving in 2000 on a Newcomb #3 loom at my son's school. Eventually the school decided to discontinue the weaving fundraiser. In 2013, we moved the Newcomb #3 into our bonus room at home and then began my odyssey in weaving. In 2017, I added 2 Leesburg looms with creel racks to my collection. I also have a LeClerc Nilus and a pair of lap looms that I am learning to use.

I enjoy handcrafting rag rugs on my floor looms. Rugs are made with fabrics sourced from mill ends, manufacturing waste fabrics, donated blue jeans and any fabrics I find in the clearance section at the store. A sustainable choice in home decor. I then mix and match the colors for traditional cotton rag rugs, mixed fabric rugs and the popular shaggy upholstery fabric selvedges.

I enjoy working with the colors and experimenting with the color wheel. Sometimes the look is amazing, on occasion not so much. I have also begun experimenting with strip length and weaving width in an attempt to produce unique designs in the weaving. I also on occasion work with unique fabrics like neckties, sari silk scraps and chenille bedspreads.

All rugs are unique in design and no two are exactly the same. They add beauty and charm to any room in your home. Add a pop of color and enhance your favorite corner, kitchen, camper or any spot needing extra character.

How it’s Made

I source new cotton fabric from manufacturing waste destined for the landfill. I take the coils of fabric and trim down into strips narrow enough for weaving. Followed by the sewing into long strips and winding onto the shuttles.

The shuttles are then used on my Leesburg loom to weave the run to the desired length or until I run out of fabric!

After weaving 5 or 6 rugs on the loom, I cut them off. Finish the ends with hand-tied knots.
