About this Product

This handcrafted twist pen features a striking barrel made from rare spalted tamarind—a wood transformed by time, fungus, and decay into something unexpectedly beautiful. Its swirling black veins and natural golden hues make each pen a one-of-one work of art.

Chrome-plated accents offer a modern touch of elegance and durability, while the streamlined silhouette conceals one of its most thoughtful features: the pocket clip is mounted at the writing tip. This clever reversal means that when you tuck the pen into your shirt or jacket, the ink cartridge is always pointed upward—dramatically reducing the chance of leaks or smudges from gravity-fed ink seepage.

This isn’t just a writing instrument. It’s a deliberate blend of nature, function, and craftsmanship.

Meet the Maker

Hi, I’m Chad—the craftsman behind every piece at StoneWood Designs.

I’ve been a woodworker for as long as I can remember. Whether building something practical or designing something purely for beauty, I’ve always found joy in shaping raw materials into lasting, meaningful objects. In recent years, that passion led me to the lathe—where form, texture, and purpose come together in a way that’s both meditative and endlessly creative.

From pens and bowls to holiday décor, kitchen tools, and desk accessories, everything I make starts with one thing: exceptional material. Living in Las Vegas means I have to work hard to source great wood—but I see that as a feature, not a bug. I spend hours tracking down the right pieces, often working with other small makers across the country to find sustainable, unique woods and hybrid materials. I pride myself on pairing each one perfectly with its hardware, so the design feels complete—intentional from start to finish.

If I had to sum up what I hope you feel when you see or hold one of my pieces? Evocative. Whether it’s a pen that reminds you of the ocean or a bowl that feels rooted in tradition, I want it to spark something. A memory. A mood. A sense of connection.

Supporting handmade work keeps these skills alive—and keeps small makers thriving. I’m proud to be part of that, and I’m grateful you’re here.

How it’s Made

The journey begins with a salvaged block of tamarind—partially decayed and artistically streaked through the slow, natural spalting process. Once stabilized to preserve its form, the blank is meticulously turned by hand in our Las Vegas studio to reveal a landscape of texture and contrast that can’t be replicated.

After shaping, it’s finished with a durable, glossy polish that preserves the feel of real wood while highlighting its most dramatic features. Finally, we install a twist mechanism and carefully align the clip at the pen’s front tip—a small detail that offers big peace of mind for pocket carry.
