About this Product

TIMELESS CELTIC CROSS PANEL

This SCW Glassworks original pays homage the Celtic style windows of the past, found throughout Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Weaving knot elements were used to form intricate boarder elements and a stunning jewel incrusted cross. Consisting of over 350 parts carefully shaped from hand-blown artisan glass, this one of a kind panel will provide inspiration and joy for generations.

The cross floats in is a cloud of streaky whites broken by a thick grid pattern that turns a lovely shade of gold in the sunlight. The cross is a deep green base framed by rich browns and wrapped in a knot of golden yellow. Each end of the cross is capped by pink flower peddles holding round beveled glass jewels. The center of the cross is a beveled glass diamond. The panel is framed out in a triple board of wispy beiges and rich browns with decretive bevels and capped with green accents at the corners.

A thick zinc frame secures the piece, making it perfect for hanging or mounting into a window opening. The solder lines and frame have been finished in black patina adding to the panel's sense of age and history. Solder, frame and glass have been protected with Carnauba wax and buffed to a high polished shine.

All SCW Glassworks art uses studio quality, cathedral glass that will never fade in color. Sturdy rings are located on top corners of the piece for hanging. This is a perfect accent panel for any decor. You will love watching the rainbow effect from the cross’s bevels as it jumps to life in the sun.

Meet the Maker

Photographer, graphic artist, web developer and tech professional turned stained glass artist and following his dreams.

After decades within with digital media I found myself compelled to create something that was real, something that would last.  This lead me to walk into my first stained glass shop….my world would never be the same.

This journey of eduction in my craft has been an amazing one with tips from online communities and guidance from local glass artists with decades of experience.  The joy of this craft is only outshone by the glee of someone purchasing my work and hearing the stories of how that work brought joy others.

It is often said that you have to give something away in order to keep it.  This is why I am proud to be part of goimagine.com and their commitment to helping children, giving the next generation the opportunity to follow their dreams too.

How it’s Made

My process begins with a line drawing where each line is purpose built; to render the form while structurally supporting the image it creates.  Once the design is finalized, the right method of contraction is chosen. This sun catcher uses the “Tiffany Method” pioneered by the Tiffany glass company at the beginning of the 20th century. A thin layer of copper is adhered to each glass element that is then soldered together.  This technique is great for smaller projects where thinner graceful lines hold everything in place.

Selection of the right glass is performed, taking into account the opacity, colors & textures best suited for the design.  Next I meticulous score, break and refine each glass element to the exact shape needed. These elements are placed on the bench and carefully inspected to assure accuracy. Each glass element is cleaned and then painstakingly wrapped in copper foil.

The elements reassembled on the bench and tacked together using 60/40 solder (60% tin & 40% led).  Once the elements are stabilized the solder is heated and applied to all seams.  The final product is protected with Carnauba wax that is applied and buffed many times over until to a high polished shine is attained.
