About this pattern: Susan B. Anthony (1820-1906) was born in Adams, MA, but grew up along the Battenkill River near Greenwich, NY in rural Washington County. As early as 1837, she was active in the Abolition & Temperance Movements & taught school for a number of years, but was frustrated that she did not receive the same pay as her male counterparts. Shortly after meeting Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Anthony began campaigning for women’s rights, & suffrage full time. In 1869 the duo formed the National Woman Suffrage Association (later National American Woman Suffrage Association) and campaigned exclusively for the right for women to vote. In 1872, Anthony, her sister Mary, & a handful of other women voted in the election of 1872. Some of the women were arrested, but only Susan B. Anthony was forced to stand trial, where she was found guilty of voting illegally. Anthony would never legally cast a ballot before her death.
