How it’s Made
Our process begins by drawing by hand with a crow quill dipping pen and India ink. A crow quill is a metal pen nib with very fin tip,. Sadly, it is not made with an actual crow feather. The drawings are scanned at very high resolution, and a composition is designed from them. Then that composition is separated into the colors we will use on the press, and a film file is created from it. The film is used to create a plate, one plate for each color. The ink is hand mixed and applied to the press. Each card is 2-3 press runs in different colors, letterpress printed on a Heidelberg Windmill, a beautiful antique mechanical printing machine that was made around 1950. The cards are trimmed to size on a manual Chandler & Price guillotine that belonged to the US Army in World War II, and then individually scored with a relatively more contemporary manual tabletop scoring device.
