About this Product

Stand with style.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve tried to prop up your iPad using various things lying around your kitchen, home or office.  Even when you do get it standing just so, it’s only a matter of time before it slides off your cobbled-together support with a big thud!  Plus, your eye for style keeps nudging you to figure out a cleaner, more modern solution than your pillow/brick combo that barely works. I had the same problem, so I set out to create a stand that holds my iPad and Kindle at the perfect angle without sacrificing style.

The Ray iPad Stand takes its inspiration from modern bent plywood’s roots: The Eames LCW molded plywood chair.  The bent plywood construction creates a stronger material than solid wood, so I can achieve the modern, minimal aesthetic that pairs so nicely with modern electronics.  Just like Charles & Ray Eames, I spent countless hours carefully testing and tweaking the design until I zeroed in on the perfect angles and proportions.  As a result, the Ray iPad Stand securely holds tablets of all sizes at just the right angle for cooking from a recipe, watching a movie, working with an extra monitor, and so much more.

Made to order in about 1 week.

  • Height: 7"
  • Width: 6"
  • Depth: 5.5"
  • Plywood Thickness: 0.25"
  • Weight: 0.5 lbs
  • Each stand is handmade from natural materials, so there will be some variation in color and wood grain.

I make each Ray from 10 layers of real wood that are glued, layered, trimmed, sanded, and finished by hand, to-order so each one is impeccably made and completely unique.  The matte, all natural oil finish creates a rich, natural look that's durable and is water- and stain-resistant without requiring frequent re-application.  It's applied by hand to ensure complete coverage, optimal thickness and a hand-rubbed lustre that holds for years to come, so you won’t have to worry about spills or splatters while you cook.  Cork feet keep it from sliding and protect from scratches.  The natural wood, modern lines, and hand-crafted attention to detail create a completely unique piece for your one-of-a-kind style.

You don’t have to take my word for it.  Here’s some feedback I'm getting for the Ray:

"So many iPad stands are functional -- and look it. If you want a break from black plastic in the kitchen, try this one -- a gorgeous swoop of bent plywood.” - Faith from The Kitchn
"Each tablet stand is an impressive display of stupifyingly simple design. It certainly functions well with its engineered objective, but you might be tempted to never mount an iPad on the stand and leave it as a self-contained design that captures attention by itself.” - Gabriel from Busyboo

Ciseal was inspired by the Midcentury Modern architecture and design that’s so prevalent in and around Detroit.  The thoughtful, functional blend of nature and the modern, clean lines of these buildings influenced me to create my own designs using the natural material and modern method of woodlayering.

Ciseal began in 2013 with a few layers of wood veneer, a bottle of wood glue, a handmade mold and some clamps.  Those ingredients made my very first product - the Ray iPad Stand (and I still use that original mold!).  Ciseal has been growing steadily ever since - supporting my design habit one woodlayered product at a time.

I proudly design and make all of my products to-order and by hand in my Troy, Michigan studio.  After searching high and low for the best, strongest, most flexible wood to make my products, I found it in my own backyard.  My wood layers are sustainably-sourced from responsibly-harvested maple tree forests in the upper midwest.  Each Ciseal product is still inspired by my neighborhood and thoughtfully vetted through countless hours of research, design, and crafting.  The finished products I offer are the result of many iterations and fine tuning for comfort, usability, and style.  The quality of my products is in the details: the intentional curves, the hand-layered, sustainable wood veneer, and the ease of use.

Ciseal is an Irish Gaelic word for layer.  It's pronounced KISH-ill by the Irish, but I've taken to pronouncing it sis-EEL

Woodlayering is my craft, but as a person, I'm always learning, growing, and evolving.  Ciseal is about how we layer the trappings of life in a way that uniquely speaks to our soul.  It’s a way of life, a mindset that focuses our attention on finding and embracing all of the layers that matter so that we are free to take our pleasure seriously.
