About this Product

What did we ever use for skin care before chemically laden skin care products dominated the market?

Tallow, for one. :)

Many believe that Grass-fed tallow is the single best ingredient for moisturizing your skin. Our tallow is hand-rendered here at our farm and is absolutely and always sourced locally from grass-fed/finished cows who roam free on the farms they are raised in. They are local to us.

Bushyhead Botanicals offers three formulations of tallow balm for different skin issues… This listing is for our Calm formula. Calm is formulated for sensitive and irritated skin. It contains what are known to be skin friendly anti-microbial essential oils.

Grass-fed (and finished - important!) tallow balm is the single best ingredient for moisturizing our skin. Our tallow is hand-rendered here at our farm and is absolutely and always sourced locally from grass-fed cows who roam free on the farms they are raised in. They are local to us. It’s a safe and natural way to keep your skin looking healthy.

Tallow is a very powerful ally if you suffer from sensitive/irritated skin,

Dryness, itchiness, and redness are just some of the symptoms of sensitive skin. You may have experienced inflammation from using a particular product or noticed puffiness from seasonal allergies. Synthetic fragrance found in conventional beauty products can also irritate the skin because of the high level of toxicity. Unlike fragrances, however, essential oils have therapeutic value that can drastically improve the condition of your skin.

About the essential oils...

? Basil EO: Essential oil extracted from holy basil (Ocimum sanctum) contains soothing properties that can help to relieve discomfort from itchy skin. A combination of basil oil and carrier oil can help to get rid of red skin patches caused by eczema.

Clinical trials found that holy basil essential oil help to reduce skin inflammation and pain.

Indian J Exp Biol. 1999 Nov;37(11):1136-8.

? Bergamot EO: Bergamot essential oil is another great eczema remedy that you can add to a carrier oil. The benefits of bergamot oil to patches of chronically itchy, dry, thickened skin are that it helps to soothe inflammation and kill off skin infections.

The anti-inflammatory effect of bergamot was reported in a research paper published in 2007. The researchers found that bergamot oil has “promising anti-inflammatory activity."

Eur J Gen Med. 2007 Jan;4(4)

? Cedarwood EO: Cedarwood contributes antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties to natural product formulations, making it ideal for preparations that address conditions such as acne, psoriasis, and eczema. Cedarwood can help soothe irritation, inflammation, redness, and itchiness, as well as dryness that leads to cracking, peeling, or blistering. It helps regulate sebum production, eliminates acne-causing bacteria, guards the skin against environmental pollutants and toxins, reduces the chances of future breakouts. Cedarwood is a very calming oil.

? Geranium EO: Geranium essential oil is a good choice for people who want to keep their skin young as well as prevent premature aging signs. Like other anti aging essential oils, this oil owns antioxidants, helping to tighten your skin and improve its elasticity, thus reducing wrinkles, fine lines, and age spots. Geranium essential oil is also responsible for stimulating blood circulation beneath the skin surface, which is very necessary for flawless skin and also overall physical health. Plus, it is also a natural cytophylactic, which will promote cell health, encourage the dead cell to recycle and the new cell regeneration. It is also said to also reduce swelling and lighten scars.

? Lavender EO: The essential oil is very gentle even used on baby's skin. It is soothing, calming, reduces itchiness and can be used with skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea. It is a natural choice for sensitive skin. J Ethnopharm. 2003 Nov; 89(1): 67-71. Eur J Den 2013 Sep; 7(Suppl 1): S71–S77.

? Patchouli EO: Patchouli essential oil may have a very strong, musky, spicy scent but it is more than that and is very good for sensitive skin as it is a tissue regenerator. Sensitive problems like dry patches, eczema, and psoriasis are calmed by this wonderful essential oil. Patchouli oil is known for reducing both pain and inflammation. These qualities are especially helpful for treating eczema rashes.

? Peppermint EO: This essential oil smells great and makes me breathe easy. It is possibly the oil with the most uses, many of which are beneficial to the skin. It is great for reducing itching when your skin is inflamed and irritated, be it from eczema, psoriasis, or an insect bite. It is also used for sunburn relief, and can hydrate burnt skin, relieve pain, and promote skin renewal. However, be careful not to apply it close to the eyes, the menthol will make you tear up. Also, it may sting a little, but do not fret as it will be refreshing more than anything else.

Sandalwood EO: Sandalwood essential oil can help to relieve patches of eczema that are itchy, thickened, and scaly.

A study published in 2017 found that sandalwood essential oil alleviates inflammation in inflammatory skin conditions. Researchers found that applying sandalwood to the skin helped treat symptoms of scaling, dry skin, redness, swelling, and inflammation that are typical of psoriasis.

Front Pharmacol. 2017 Mar 16;8:125.

Tea Tree EO: The antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties of tea tree oil make this is a great essential oil for treating eczema outbreaks.

For example, the book Herbal Treatments for Dermatologic Disorders reported that remedies containing tea tree oil kill off various strains of bacteria on the skin including Staphylococcus aureus.

A study into the medicinal properties of tea tree oil found that it reduces inflammatory skin reactions caused by histamine. This is a substance that is released by the body during an allergic reaction. An application of tea tree oil reduced skin redness and swelling. Scientists know that histamine is connected with outbreaks of atopic dermatitis.

Ann Dermatol. 2011 Sep; 23(Suppl 1): S91–S95.

Ylang Ylang EO: (pronounced “EElang EElang”.) The anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties of ylang ylang oil make it good for soothing skin irritations. Dry skin is the common culprit that triggers chronic skin ailments including eczema and psoriasis. Hydrating properties in ylang ylang essential oil can improve your skin texture by moisturizing. Ylang Ylang protects skin cells from oxidative stress and DNA damage and is excellent for all skin types.. but super calming and soothes sensitive, blotchy, allergic skin. Also, absorbing ylang ylang essential oil through the skin can also reduce stress. When inhaling the ylang ylang oil, it helps induce a sense of calm. This is one essential oil I would NEVER be without.

Meet the Maker

Wildcrafting herbs has been part of my life since I was a little girl and my grandmother made us all pull over on our way anywhere to pick "a mess of poke" or the occasional, "Oh heavens! Pull over James! There's a whole stand of Lambs Quarter out there, I can see it from here! We can use that for dinner!" My wise grandmother knew more about herbs than I did. I had no idea you had to boil poke before you could eat it or it could poison you. Without regard to the reckless abandon with which my grandmother allowed me to jump out of the car to help, she turned it into lessons I was never to forget.

While a young mother with a budget of $50 a week for eight, I learned to scavenge what was in the woods around our home. With the help of a local herbalist, we ate extremely well for "poor folk".I can't say I've always been interested in herbs that didn't come in pill form.

I cannot say I always wanted to know every single plant that grew within walking distance. I just knew that somewhere inside, I knew I would come back to "the old ways". I have often been "intellectually interested" at best. But I have watched the plants that grow on every property I have ever lived on, planted things no matter where I've been. I have watched the way people do things; asked a LOT of questions. I haven't always followed suit... I mean am sincerely NOT a fan of chickweed tea, I don't care how good it is for me; but everyone can develop a tolerance for what is good (for you!) and it becomes better tasting the better you feel. My website and my products are built for those of you who know that without the use of herbs we are just somehow, more vulnerable.

I feel stronger when I use herbs every day. I feel more accomplished when I grow my herbs myself and I feel happier selling organic homegrown herbs to people. I feel more comfortable in my own skin in at the farm. How do you feel? Does something always nag at you, urge you? ... to go out there, to be responsible for your health? Does something tell you that the anti-depressants that the doctor prescribes are NOT working? Feel like you should DO something but you are just not sure where to begin? Do you feel there is simply a way to feel better; more energetic? Healthier somehow?

I KNOW that feeling. And I have tried to harness it here. There is a reason you feel that way... it is up to you to decipher exactly what it is that compels YOU, but there IS a reason. Some of it is very tangible. Our food supply is in peril. Pesticides are damaging us in ways we are only beginning to understand. People die every single day by the thousands of diet induced disease. This begs the question, "Is it our food supply?" or "Is it the irresponsible way we put anything down our throat without fear of consequence?"

I think it's a lot of both.

I watched my grandmother a lot when I was a young girl. She was walking around barefoot in the yard with her hands out to her side, looking up at the sky. I asked her what she was doing. She said, "I'm grounding myself." I thought my grandmother was weird till the day she passed from this world. It was only after she was gone that I picked up on her innate wisdom. It somehow thankfully stuck in my brain's hard drive.

Years have improved my knowledge and my skill has followed suit. I have moved many times in my 60 plus years and I have become intimate with many herbs. If I'm not an expert on anything, I AM an expert on how to find and grow an herb I would like to use. I've been very poor and I have made do with what I could find growing in the woods and prairie about me to start it all out. My point is, I have covered a lot of ground and hopefully you can benefit from my experience.
