Meet the Maker

The Maple Tiger was the best way to describe myself and the work I do as a woodworker. I grew up climbing maple trees as a child and as I grew up I learned the maple tree had the most beautiful leaves and shape of all the trees. I came to appreciate the beauty of the tree and the wood it produced.

While still remembering the time’s I enjoyed taking my children and now my grandchildren to the zoo my favorite animal was always the Tiger ,. The tiger was the most mysterious and intriguing of all the animals, so that is how The Maple Tiger was born. I've been working with wood for the better part of 40 years, making family members treasures that would last. I learned early on, if you were going to make something make it the best you can and continuously try to improve. This mentality creeped into my everyday life and I believe that it has made me a better person overall especially in my woodworking and photography. Woodworking has been a hobby of mine that has become a passion and now that I've retired from the industrial class I can concentrate on my woodworking full time.

Maple wood has many subspecies that can be stunning to the eyes, some examples are Tiger Maple, Curly Maple, Ambrosia Maple, Birdseye Maple, Quilted Maple and the list goes on. There is no end on how to finish these maples, so the creativity can keep on expanding. I still make some projects with other woods, it's just maple is my favorite.

How it’s Made

This Three Shelf Sconce in made from Curly Maple wood. It is built to last for generations. The three shelf design comes from designers that have tested the group theory of three is more appeasing to the eyes, I definitely agree. I dyed the wood with a medium wood dye twice then I sand off the top finish then apply two more coats of dye. I then use a Danish oil and hand rub two finish coats let dry for 3 days and then I apply 3 poly top coats and then sand with 1000 grit sandpaper then top off with a final satin poly coat.
