Meet the Maker

I love what I do, and hope it is reflected in all of my pieces.

To me tie dying is a healing art. Color brings healing, support, comfort and joy and I try to convey that in my work. Tie dye is meant to be worn for years, the material becoming thin from years of wear, a hole in the sleeve or a frayed hem but the dye is still vibrant, withstanding the test of time and wear. I also love to tie dye thrifted items, making tie dyed clothing not a fast fashion, but something that will be worn for years and a go to favorite for special occasions. Tie dye is about your style, not fashion.

I send to you love and healing.

How it’s Made

There are several steps to making these shirts. I buy the shirts new, and they then have to be washed to remove any manufacturing prepping chemicals. After the shirts are washed they go into a soda ash bath for several hours to prepare the fabric for the dying. After soaking, I hand wring out the shirts, and then place them in the washing machine on the spin cycle to remove as much of the soda ash solution and leave them damp. Now each shirt is ready to be folded, tied, rubber banded, spiraled, crinkled and formed so it is ready to be dyed. The dying process is so much fun! Laying down the different colors in different patterns is what creates the amazing patterns and color bursts in the shirts. This shirt has been made with the hot water irrigation method. Instead of mixing dye powders with water to make liquid, the dye powder is put directly onto the fabric and then hot water is poured over the design to set the color. After the color has sat on the fabric for about a day, the shirts have to be rinsed to get the majority of the dye out of the fabric and then washed three times. After the second wash, the shirts are heat set in the a high heat dryer, and then washed for the third time. After the final wash and dry, the shirts are neatly folded and stored until it finds its new home!

Washing three times should be enough to consider this item is safe for washing with other clothes, but there is a possibility of slight color loss on the next wash, so please wash responsibly. Avoid washing in hot water, avoid using bleach. Wash separately in cold water, using your favorite laundry detergent. Because there is always a slight chance of color loss, I cannot be responsible for any other garment washed with this piece.
