About this Product

This beautiful tournament size wooden chess set is made using quality solid hardwoods and precision craftsmanship to create an heirloom quality set. The board is made in our shop in Missouri out of solid black walnut for the dark squares, and solid maple for the light squares. The geometric design carved into the border makes a truly distinctive chess board that you'll enjoy using and be proud to display. Expertly carved wooden chess pieces complete the set.

This is a large wooden chess board, with a playing surface of regulation tournament size: 2-1/4" squares, 18" playing surface (21-1/2" overall size with the borders).

➤ PIECES: Set includes solid wooden chessmen made by craftsmen in India, the global leader in quality wooden chess pieces. Pieces come in a cotton drawstring bag. Choose standard or premium.

Standard: This is a quality Staunton-style set with 3-3/4" king (king's base is 1-1/2"). Light pieces are boxwood, dark pieces are acacia wood. Pieces are weighted with green felt on bottom. Extra queens available; contact us to add them to your order.

Premium: These Staunton-style pieces are tall and graceful with a 4" king (king's base is 1-3/4"). This set features a lovely smooth finish and highly detailed carving. Double queens are included. Light pieces are boxwood, dark pieces are sheesham. Pieces are nicely weighted and lined with green felt on the bottom.

Contact us if you'd like to order the board without pieces.

➤ CUSTOM ENGRAVING: We can engrave names, dates, or a message on the back of the board. Select the "custom engraving" option and enter your request when you order. We'll send a proof for your approval before we actually engrave your board, so please watch for that message.

➤ NATURAL BEAUTY: Each handmade walnut and maple chess board is unique due to natural variations in the color and grain of wood. This variation is part of the beauty of working with natural materials. The item you receive will vary slightly from the one that's pictured here, but will be equally beautiful.

➤ SIZE/DIMENSIONS of BOARD:
Playing surface: 18" x 18" (2-1/4" light and dark squares)
Overall size with border: 21-1/2" square x 3/4" thick

The playing surface is backed by Baltic birch for stability, with rubber pads on the bottom of the board.

➤ GIFTS: We do not include price info in our packages. If you'd like to include a gift message, please mark your order as a gift and select that option when you check out.

Meet the Maker

At Three Trees Workshop, we make wooden games that inspire creativity and connection with the world around us. We use quality solid hardwoods, locally sourced whenever possible, and eco-friendly finishes. And we offer custom engraving for a truly personal touch.

Three Trees was started by Nathan and Cynthia Epp, a husband-and-wife team based in Warrensburg, Missouri. Although we’re both from the Midwest, we met in East Africa while serving as Peace Corps Volunteers. We bring our own values into our business, creating pieces that reflect our love of the natural world, the delight of exploration, and the joy found in personal connections.

We created Three Trees Workshop in 2015 upon returning to the US from Kenya. After years of travel and transition, we were looking to stay in one place for a while. It seemed the right time to act on a long-time dream--a full time creative pursuit based on Nathan's love for woodworking and our desire to make beautiful, useful things.
