Hi, I’m Chad—the craftsman behind every piece at StoneWood Designs.
I’ve been a woodworker for as long as I can remember. Whether building something practical or designing something purely for beauty, I’ve always found joy in shaping raw materials into lasting, meaningful objects. In recent years, that passion led me to the lathe—where form, texture, and purpose come together in a way that’s both meditative and endlessly creative.
From pens and bowls to holiday décor, kitchen tools, and desk accessories, everything I make starts with one thing: exceptional material. Living in Las Vegas means I have to work hard to source great wood—but I see that as a feature, not a bug. I spend hours tracking down the right pieces, often working with other small makers across the country to find sustainable, unique woods and hybrid materials. I pride myself on pairing each one perfectly with its hardware, so the design feels complete—intentional from start to finish.
If I had to sum up what I hope you feel when you see or hold one of my pieces? Evocative. Whether it’s a pen that reminds you of the ocean or a bowl that feels rooted in tradition, I want it to spark something. A memory. A mood. A sense of connection.

How it’s Made
It begins with a block of raw walnut burl—dense, unpredictable, and full of hidden character. Each burl is unique, formed by stress and survival on the tree. No two look alike, and no amount of planning guarantees what’s inside. That’s the challenge—and the reward.
The wood is first stabilized, a process where resin is drawn deep into its fibers under vacuum. This reinforces its natural voids and swirls, making it suitable for a lifetime of daily use. Once cured, the blank is hand-turned on the lathe, slowly revealing the dramatic, chaotic beauty that lay buried within. It’s a dance of heat, tool, and touch—one wrong move, and it’s firewood.
Once the shape is perfect, the wood is sanded through a dozen grits, then sealed and polished until it gleams like stone—but still feels warm in the hand. The hardware is then precisely threaded and assembled around a spiral-actuated mechanism, which is tuned to operate with a fluid twist—not too loose, not too stiff.
The result is a pen that doesn’t just write. It invites interaction—a piece of kinetic art disguised as a writing instrument.
