Woods By Robert
Meet the Maker
Robert Portney, known as The Carpentryman, has been a contractor and carpenter for over 30 years. He has showcased his work in many juried shows such as The Collingswood NJ May Fair and Collinswood NJ Art Fair. All his work is handmade, making each piece unique. Robert operates out of a small shop in his home. In his early years, he specialized in making cutting boards and later started creating side tables with only three legs for a different look. He also crafts mitered or lap joint boxes to store keepsakes, jewelry, and remote controls. His process involves acquiring the wood, milling each piece to size, assembling, gluing, and extensive hand sanding. The finish is applied and polished with beeswax. Each box is made unique by adding a different handle and is finished with non-toxic materials.

How it’s Made
I pre-select the kind of wood I want to use, then all the wood is cut into tops, sides, ends, and bases. All the pieces are then mitered to 45 degrees to create the corners of the boxes. The bottoms are fitted to the box. The top lid has been cut to fit into the box.
Each box is hand-sanded to a smooth feel. Each top is fitted with a custom unique handle. Water-based stains or milk paints are used. We then finish with non-toxic finishes like beeswax or food-grade mineral oil. No two boxes are alike.
