About this Product

This beautiful Butternut platter is hand turned and features a food-safe walnut oil-based finish. This platter is made from a Butternut tree that was harvested after standing dead for a few years. The holes you see were made from small beetles and other insects and they give this gorgeous piece an enormous amount of character. This beauty is truly a one-of-a-kind piece! Note: The beetles and other insects are long gone :)

The size of this bowl is:
17 1/2 inches in diameter & 2 1/2 inches tall

All pieces are finished with food safe finishes
Bowls should be hand washed, then immediately dried to protect the finish. Do not immerse in water.
Bowls are not dishwasher or microwave safe.
If a bowl's finish begins to dull, it can be refreshed with mineral/walnut oil or butcher block oil available at your local hardware, grocery or building supply store.

My bowls and platters are made primarily from freshly cut logs.  I get the logs from friends and neighbors that have lost trees due to storm damage and I also get them from tree service people who bring them to me instead of the landfill.  I cut the logs into sections and then cut the sections into bowl blanks.  I mount the blank on the lathe then turn it into the rough shape I want but with thicker walls and bottom.  I coat the rough turned bowls with a sealer then put them on a shelf in the shop for 3 - 12 months and when they're dry enough, I finish turn them on the lathe to their final shape and thickness, sand them smooth then apply a food-safe finish.

Meet the Maker

After nearly 30 years of being a carpenter then a second career in IT as a Network Engineer, I took up woodturning and just love it! I've been woodturning for almost four years now and I try to improve my skills every day through practice, reading, videos and feedback from my wife :) We have two Australian Shepherd dogs that keep us busy as both love to head to the park to play Frisbee and they're both great at it!

I use only domestic hardwoods in my work as I don't think you need to look to South America or Africa to find gorgeous wood, it's growing all around us, right here in the US!

I do custom orders in addition to the items I have listed, just shoot me a message and I'll respond just as quickly as I am able....Thanks!
