How it’s Made

Creating a wicked scale pattern reverse tie-dye shirt is an adventure in color and contrast! First, gather your supplies: a dark-colored cotton shirt, bleach or a bleach solution, rubber bands, squeeze bottles, gloves, and a plastic bin. This time, we’re removing color instead of adding it, to reveal some gnarly patterns.

Start by laying your dark shirt flat and folding it accordion-style, like you're making a paper fan. Then, fold it in the opposite direction to create a grid-like pattern. Secure your folds with rubber bands to keep everything in place.

Next, set up your reverse dyeing area by placing the folded and banded shirt in a plastic bin to catch any spills. Mix your bleach solution (about one part bleach to two parts water) and carefully pour it into a squeeze bottle. Put on your gloves to protect your hands, and gently apply the bleach solution along the folds and creases of the shirt. The bleach will lighten the fabric and create the cool, scale-like pattern.

Let the bleach do its thing for about 10–15 minutes, but keep an eye on it—you don’t want to over-bleach and weaken the fabric. Once you see the color change to your liking, rinse the shirt thoroughly with cold water to stop the bleaching process.

Finally, wash the shirt in cold water with a mild detergent to remove any remaining bleach, and let it dry. What you’ll have is a rad, one-of-a-kind scale pattern reverse tie-dye shirt that’s full of unique contrasts and groovy vibes. Peace, love, and creativity!
