About this Product

A Bucket Hat custom created for you from your loved one's clothing becomes a one of a kind memory keeper.

You will have a unique accessory made just for you, from the clothing you provide, with the accents and upgrades that you choose.

Many memory items are great for cuddling. Pillows, bears, and blankets are comforting.  There will be a time when you are ready to be a part of the things that happen outside of your home. You will want to do the things you used to do with your friend, partner, or spouse who has passed. Ease the reconnection with the world a little bit by having that special person be active with you again, in a heartfelt, sweet, and symbolic way.

This custom made accessory brings to you the comfort of having your bestie along to go on a walk, to a festival, to a concert, perhaps a barbecue, maybe to shop or run errands, or just sit on the porch and relax.

It is comforting to keep our loved one's memory alive in our hearts (and on our heads).

The basics:

You place the order.

I message you my address within 24 hours.

You mail the clothes to me as soon as you can.

Once I receive the clothing, I will create your custom hat in 2-3 weeks.

I mail the hat to you.

The details:

Hats have an outer shell and a lining.

The outer shell requires denim, khaki, or other 'bottom weight' WOVEN fabrics.  Basically, pants (jeans, khakis, etc). I can work around or incorporate fraying, holes, and stains.  One pair is plenty.  If you want contrasting patchwork, I will need more pants. (Upgrade). PLEASE wash clothing without heavy scents before sending!

The lining should also be a WOVEN fabric (like a men's button down shirt).  One shirt is plenty, but if you like a patchwork look, I'll need more.  That is an upgrade. You can provide flannel, but understand that you will not want to wear the hat in warm weather. Flannel really is HOT!

I can use men's ties for the lining.  I will need 3. I will back them with an iron on stabilizer, but the fabric retains its silky smoothness. This would be an upgrade, also.

The standard hat top is a basic piece of fabric.  You can choose upgrade to "strip quilt" or "patchwork". (see pictures)

You pay shipping of the clothes to me.

I pay to ship the finished hat to you.

If you want the fabric scraps sent back after the hat is made, you can choose that upgrade.

You are welcome to message me with any questions that you have.  I do enjoy hearing from customers.

Please note:

I consider it an honor to create a hat for you to remember your loved one.  I will put attention into the quality and details of the project.  I have made 100s of hats, and enjoy the process.  Look around this shop and please visit my Facebook and Instagram page to see my work.  I welcome your requests, but please know that I am a creative person and will make your hat one of a kind, just as your loved one is in your memory.  I appreciate your trust in this project.

It is vitally important that you measure the head that the hat is being made for!! Once made, the hat size cannot change.  Please measure your head accurately. It isn't difficult, but message me if you need help in understanding how to do this!

FAQ's

How will I know where to send the clothes?

After you have ordered and paid for the hat, I will email you my address. Please arrange to get your parcel in the mail ASAP to get your project in the queue. I cannot hold a place if I don't have the materials. It is best that you send your package with tracking.

What, exactly, should I send?

Basic for one hat: One pair of jeans, One shirt (non-stretch).

PLEASE wash before sending, please do not use dryer sheets or other heavily perfumed products. Thank you!

You said 'one hat'- can I get more than one?

Yes, of course. For multiple orders, please message me. I may be able to offer a quantity discount, and I can let you know how many articles of clothing I will need.

Can you incorporate something extra, like a bandana?

Surely I can. It is an upgrade. An extra odd piece works well as a heart on the lining of the hat. (see pics)

How will I know you have started my hat(s)?

Once I receive your clothing, I will message you and let you know when I expect to start and complete your custom bucket hat.

Can I have the leftover fabrics back?

Yes, to accommodate this request, I have included an upgrade in the listing to cover return postage for the scraps. Your finished hat will be shipped separately at my expense.

Can I see progress along the way?

I will send you a photo of the fabric when it arrives, and a follow-up in progress photo. The final item photo will not be sent unless you insist. I really like pleasant surprises, and I hope you do too!

Is my hat refundable or returnable?

No, your hat purchase is not refundable. I encourage you to be sure to measure the head of the person who will be wearing the hat.

PLEASE message me with any questions you don't see answered here!!

Welcome! The important thing to know is that I use up cycled fabric exclusively. Denim remakes, fabrics repurposed, always giving textiles another…

Meet the Maker

What I do:

Textiles. Creating. Repurposing. The things that I am passionate about are here.  As a sewer, maker, and creator....I offer one of a kind creations using up-cycled textiles, imagination, and respect for materials.

Fabrics come from thrift shops, auctions, donations, etc. It is time intensive to find ,'harvest' and prepare fabrics for reuse.  Being aware of the textile waste in our world has prompted me to reuse all that I can (and soap box about fast fashion at every opportunity).  Google 'Fast Fashion'...you'll understand my passion.

No new fabrics are harmed in the making of any items in this shop!

Ridiculously fun to make, LOVEpiecefully Bucket Hats are a walking billboard for reducing textile waste while you look great!

Read on to find out how this all started:

Rewind to the beginning of the pandemic. In 2020 when no PPE was available for nurses and doctors. I thought I could help in some small way, so I dug out my sewing machine and started sewing. Soon, my husband and I were making and donating masks....lots and lots of masks. We worked at this full time 'job' for months and months. Working with the AUNTIE SEWING SQUAD on FB, he and I made and donated nearly 9,000 masks and sent them to people in need all over the country.  Un-homed, migrants, our indigenous population...the forgotten folks. We are all only as healthy as our most vulnerable neighbors.

The thing about making 9,000 masks is that you create a TON of fabric scraps.I knew that I could not just toss these pieces of fabric out.

So, I started making. Bucket Hats, probably because of the endless design possibilities became my thing.

Tremendous resources are used to create fabrics, we need to use them to their fullest before we are done with them. It's just the right thing to do.

So, wear a reclaimed fabric hat....no doubt friends will ask you where it came from. You can start a great ECO-centered conversation, and you will be an environmental hero!

How it’s Made

When I begin to make a hat, especially a special one like a memorial keepsake hat, I spend extra time making a plan. What part(s) of the fabric have features (prints, pockets, distressing, etc.) that I think should be highlighted. Has the customer expressed any special concerns? Are there upgrades that I need to be aware of?

I double (triple) check the size ordered.

I set about cutting the pattern pieces for the 'shell' of the hat. I begin with the hat top. If the customer wants the basic, or one of the upgrades (strip quilt or patchwork style), I get that done first. . If I need to add an embellishment to the hat band, that is done next. I then sew the whole of the shell together.

I then repeat the process with the lining fabric(s). I piece fabrics, if the customer has provided more than one fabric for an upgrade. If ties are provided, that is a few more steps added.

I then join the shell and the lining, and finish with a few rows of top stitching on the brim.

The hat is then washed and dried.

A LOVEpiecefully patch is sewn on.

It is then ready to be packed and shipped with tracking.
