Meet the Maker

With over 40 years of knitting and crocheting experience, Kelly is not just a crafter; she's a dedicated yarn enthusiast who finds joy in every stitch. Her passion for all things yarn, especially wool, is evident in every creation she brings to life.

Kelly's creative journey led her to a unique endeavor – volunteering at a local living history museum for over three years. Here, she immersed herself in traditional fiber arts, demonstrating the intricate process of hand spinning wool as women did in times gone by. Alongside her husband, Kelly showcased the art of sheep shearing, fleece washing, combing, spinning, and transforming fiber into functional garments. What started as a creative outlet became an incredible learning experience where she realized that teaching was also an avenue for her own education in the world of wool and fibers.

The museum's ambiance and the interaction with countless visitors inspired Kelly to take her hobby to the next level. She began selling her meticulously handspun yarn and beautifully crafted hand-knit items within the museum store. Customers were captivated by the charm and warmth infused into each piece she lovingly created using her handspun yarn.

Drawing inspiration from the historical surroundings and the deep connection she forged with wool and fiber, Kelly embarked on a new chapter. She introduced a captivating line of hand-dyed yarns, carefully curated to mirror the enchanting colors in the museum's exhibits. These hand-dyed yarns reflect Kelly's artistic sensibility and commitment to preserving and celebrating the fiber arts heritage.

At Forever Winding Wool, you're not just shopping for yarn and knitted items but joining in a journey that spans decades of skill, tradition, and a genuine love for the craft. Each creation is infused with Kelly's passion, knowledge, and the rich history of wool. Whether you're an experienced fiber artist or just beginning your yarn story, Kelly welcomes you to explore a world where your creativity knows no bounds.

How it’s Made

Welcome to the captivating world of handcrafted yarn! As the artisan behind each intricately spun thread, I would like to take you through the mesmerizing journey of creating my handspun yarn.

It all begins with the finest hand-dyed wool, bursting with color. With 20+ years of experience, I carefully divide the wool into halves, preparing it for the transformation ahead. The secret to a superior yarn lies in its preparation, so I meticulously draft the wool, elongating and thinning it. This makes the fiber easier to spin and ensures the final product is imbued with a delicate consistency.

The spinning wheel comes to life as I spin the drafted wool into a single strand, a process that demands 3 to 4 hours of patient dedication. The result is a single strand of yarn infused with the essence of both the wool and the artistry poured into its creation. Now comes the pivotal moment – the decision between a 2-ply or a 3-ply yarn.

Opting for the robust elegance of a 3-ply yarn leads me down the path of the Navajo ply technique. With this method, a single strand of yarn is meticulously chained, turning one strand into 3, yielding a stronger and more durable final product. However, the color stripes gracefully stretch across the yarn, creating longer and more pronounced bands of hue.

Conversely, a 2-ply yarn introduces a fascinating twist. Two singles spun in a direction opposite to their original spin are skillfully plied together. This results in a yarn that exudes resilience while preserving a distinct color interplay.

Once the spinning is complete, the yarn embarks on its final journey. A thorough wash where excess dye is delicately washed away, leaving the yarn with an immaculate finish that is both felt and seen.  Gentle drying sets the twist of the yarn, ensuring its integrity and longevity.  I use Eucalan wool wash, which enhances the cleansing and finish of the yarn.  Excess dye is delicately washed away, leaving the yarn with an immaculate finish.

And there you have it – the artistry of your handspun yarn, a harmonious fusion of nature's fibers and human craftsmanship. Each strand tells a story of patience, skill, and devotion, ready to enhance your lovely creation with its unique charm and character.
