Unique denim sun hat with a floppy brim. Colorful and fully lined, it is made from repurposed materials, including the batting under the patchwork. XL adult size hat, this hat features quilted patchwork on the hat band and brim. Definitely a one of a kind accessory!
This hat wants to go to that festival, flea market, or barbecue and make people smile. Certain to be the only hat like it wherever you go!
The patching is from a large amount of fabric squares that I acquired at an auction. I am always rescuing fabric, and sometimes it is in need of a tremendous amount of work to become something that is useful and lovable again. This particular project is pretty spot on in both those areas.
The patching is complimented by the soft blue of the denim. The band and the brim have zig zag top-stitching. The sweet granny look of the patches needed a contemporary edginess, I thought. The denim brim is lined with more patching that peaks out from under when worn. Further lined with a monochromatic blue daisy print, there's a lot of color getting along together here.
Who said you can't follow the latest trends and make eco-friendly choices?? ALL fabrics are repurposed!
Fully lined, this hat is not recommended as a reversible.

The hat brim is 3". Hat brim is 3.5".

Meet the Maker
What I do:
Textiles. Creating. Repurposing. The things that I am passionate about are here. As a sewer, maker, and creator....I offer one of a kind creations using up-cycled textiles, imagination, and respect for materials.
Fabrics come from thrift shops, auctions, donations, etc. It is time intensive to find ,'harvest' and prepare fabrics for reuse. Being aware of the textile waste in our world has prompted me to reuse all that I can (and soap box about fast fashion at every opportunity). Google 'Fast Fashion'...you'll understand my passion.
No new fabrics are harmed in the making of any items in this shop!

Read on to find out how this all started:
Rewind to the beginning of the pandemic. In 2020 when no PPE was available for nurses and doctors. I thought I could help in some small way, so I dug out my sewing machine and started sewing. Soon, my husband and I were making and donating masks....lots and lots of masks. We worked at this full time 'job' for months and months. Working with the AUNTIE SEWING SQUAD on FB, he and I made and donated nearly 9,000 masks and sent them to people in need all over the country. Un-homed, migrants, our indigenous population...the forgotten folks. We are all only as healthy as our most vulnerable neighbors.
The thing about making 9,000 masks is that you create a TON of fabric scraps.I knew that I could not just toss these pieces of fabric out.
So, I started making. Bucket Hats, probably because of the endless design possibilities became my thing.
Tremendous resources are used to create fabrics, we need to use them to their fullest before we are done with them. It's just the right thing to do.
So, wear a reclaimed fabric hat....no doubt friends will ask you where it came from. You can start a great ECO-centered conversation, and you will be an environmental hero!
How it’s Made
A bucket hat made of upcycled denim is a unique and eco-friendly piece of headwear. It is handmade using repurposed denim fabric, giving it a rugged and durable look. The hat is one of a kind, with a patchwork design created by sewing together pieces of different denim fabrics to create a colorful and distinctive appearance. The use of up cycled materials makes this hat an environmentally-friendly choice, as it helps to reduce waste and conserve resources. The handmade nature of the hat ensures that it is a high-quality and well-crafted piece, making it a special and exclusive item to own. I never pretend that they are perfect. These hats are created of imperfect materials by a real (admittedly imperfect) human in her home studio. Each has its own unique look--and i dare say, personality.
I source fabrics from many places. Thrift stores, friends' closets, auctions.....and of course my own 'stash' from a lifetime of sewing.
I then wash, sort, 'harvest' useable pieces...
I am sometimes inspired by a new trend, sometimes by a color or pattern in a fabric, sometimes I have no inspiration and just feel like creating and magic happens!
I cut, piece, iron, sew, (sometimes cuss) and stitch some more.
I wash the almost finished hat to encourage fraying--or just to test it's washability.
I press them a bit. I stitch on the label.

Rinse, repeat!
